Need some serious opinions on what to have in a gym

I recently talked to someone that said if I bring a good enough business portfolio, he will see what he can do about getting me started owning my own gym. I read through some of the archives about equipement some would want but I would like more opinions. I know I'm gonna have to build a gym that caters to the majority but I would like to somehow cater to the hardcore crowd by somehow giving the customer the decision of either joining for the healthclub or if they wish, join b/c of the gym. If anyone has a gym I would really like to hear the pro's and con's of the business. Thanks guys. :D

If you cater to everyone:

Enough cardio equipment so that people don't have to wait on a busy day. Aerobics/step classes for the chicks. Sauna/pool/steam room for the old men. Nautilus circuit for the casual workout person. Hammer Strength and free weights for the big boys and wannabes - Smith machine, dumbells up to 200lbs etc.
my 2 cents

one of the cheapest pices of equipment that alot of gyms over look, Dip and pull up station. Also the best piece of equipment that I loved and have only seen in one gym ever is a dip and pull up machine that lets you decress the percentage of your own body weight so that you can do higher reps, was also good for people that could not do a pull up to get started on so they could work there way up to doing them.- Superfrk

Well what I would like to do is make the entrance have two separate walkways. To the left or what would be the front, would be the big glass windows to show all the nice cardio and machine bs. Then to the right, would be the way to the real gym so they could have their own stereo system, weights, etc.

I owned my own gym...past tense....it did not make it. It is a hard business especially if there is competition in your area. I spent $200,000 on equipment alone. My place was the bomb! catered to everyone no matter what they needed. Unless you have mad cash to run it for a couple of years I would not do it. It set me back YEARS finacially Iobably lose my house as well. any questions PM me and I will give you my phone # I hate to see you fuck yourself up like I did.
