Need help with home equipment....

Baby Gorilla

New member
I've had it with gyms. The ones here that have good eqipment are unreliable, and I'd be better off training at home.

HANDS DOWN...WHO HAD THE BEST PRICES ON GYM EQUIPMENT?

I don't need "the best" but I want durable stuff at the best price. I live in the middle of nowhere, so it has to be mail order/shipped to where I live.

I got mine from bigfitness.com. I bought this machine and love it, http://www.bigfitness.com/5inmodpowcen.html.

I train at home exclusively now. I spent around $3,000 and got: squat rack, inclinable bench, lat pulldown with pulley row, press/hack combo, extension/curl combo, hyper-extension machine, and dumbell rack - goes up to 120. I get it all done, and it fits nicely into a 12 by 12 room. Can't remember the name of the type of equipment I've got, bought it from a local company at the time. I thought I'd give you a sense of what I bought though.....

I found my stuff in the paper classified ads a gym was closing down i bought almost half of the equiptment for 2,500.00 including all york olympic bar 2 of em about 1800 lbs of plates, york dumbell set 5lbs- to-130lbs. lat pulldown rowing mach. lots more............ RADAR

Any other places?

thate, the link doesn't work...just redirects you to BigFitness.com's main page. I downloaded both catalogs and nothing is what I'm looking for.

I have the e-catalog from promaximamfg.com and it had the kind of equipment I'm looking for, I'm just trying to see who has the best prices or even quality used equipment.

I'm looking to build a home gym with the equipment I most want....

So, I'm looking for the following items....
  • Power cage (don't know if narrow or deep is better....might spring the extra $$$ for the extra depth) -- Primary use....squats and deadlifts. A deeper unit might enable me to do most freeweight work there too.
  • Std. Olympic bar
  • Std. curl bar
  • Shrug bar....I currently use heavy dumbells, but it'd be easier to use this with bar weights cost-wise.
  • Lat pulldown and Lat Row machine (I'm looking at combined unit for space considerations...also tends to be cheaper)
  • Protective floor mats (how much space I don't know yet...might need two mats)
  • Adjustable bench (flat/incline use mostly). If it has a preacher curl attachment, it might be handy otherwise that's a seperate item I'll need.
  • Chinup/dip stand....one that's designed to be stable so you can also use inversion boots.
  • Weights....These might be the easiest to find. For my freeweight work (dumbells), I could try to track down used or just get the weights I use most.

The only things I'm not sure on that I might need covers these exercises....

1. Leg curls....I can do 200-220 in the gym, so a wussie machine won't cut it. I don't know what freeweight alternative exists. I think I'll have no choice but to buy some type of specialized machine for this unless someone knows a great way to hit the hamstrings without a machine.

2. Weighted crunches....I currently use an incline sit-up bench and put about 120lbs on my chest. I won't have the weights, so the incline bench might not be needed. Perhaps using inversion boots and doing crunches that way will give the same benefits....hmmm.

3. Calves....the seated calf is what I must have now. I can't do standing calves without needing lot of weight and/or lots of reps. One of these don't cost much, but if there's a unit that gives you more than one use for the price, I'd prefer getting the best bang for my buck.

Of course, I'd need mirrors, but I'm sure there's places local that sell cheap mirrors.

Any helpful leads or tips gets Karma because I appreciate any help I can get. :D

Try this link, http://www.bigfitness.com/bigfit/5inmodpowcen.html You can do lying leg curls and stiff leg dead lifts on this unit. For calves I stand, seated kills my knees anyway. For abs I do incline situps and decline leg raises which is good enough for me.

The only brand I am really familar with is Parabody. It is good stuff just a little expensive. You could probably find something cheaper but I am just trying to give you options.

Power rack - you can get a lat pull down/low row attachement that bolts on to the cage, dip attachment to go on the cage. No need for the chin up/dip station as you can do both exercises (and use the cage for the inversion boots). No need for the seperate lat pulldown/low row machine (this saves space).

Multi-angle bench - You can add a preacher curl attachment to it as well as a leg curl leg extension piece. You can also use it for your weighted crunches.

All you need now are your weights and bars. This set up is great for the home and doesn't take up to much space.

All the Parabody stuff will cost about $1450 retail, then $200 for an olympic weight set, dumbells probably about .50 cents per pound. Price is a little steep but it is good stuff. Find a store and tell them you want a deal. You could work them for a twenty percent discount. So you would looking at about $1200 to $1300 for the set up.

Your best bet is to find it used. You could probably get the same set up for about $600 bucks. The trouble is finding it.

Don't know if this helps but whatever you do try to combine the power rack, dip, chin-up, lat, and low row all into one. Saves money and space.

PARABODY

I just got a parabody rack system with lat attachment, dip bars, fid bench, leg curl/ext. and 300lb. olympic weight set for about a grand. It's really nice. If you go to parabodys site you can put in your zip code and find the nearest retailers I think.

body solid makes some decent lower end stuff, check out bodysolid.com also megafitness.com and globalfitness.com have some decent deals occasionally.

Bodysolid makes decent stuff. You should be able to get a complete system similar to the Parabody I described for a little cheaper.

I need one of them squat rack/power cage things... some sort of incline/flat bench to bench on... and a bunch of other crap... oh, and I need a house to put it all in, my apartment is small... hook a brother up.

http://www.newyorkbarbells.com/ i have alot of the TDS stuff from here it holds up great. ive moved about 5 times since i bought everything. it was all easy to take apart and put back together no problem.

I second that. I have a TDS Mega Bench and 400# at two different locations. Never need a gym and work out whenever I FEEL LIKE IT. Makes way more sense. The wave of the future I think, unless you are at the gym for socializing.

That is indeed the one. Get the squat safety stands and you will find it to be safe to do squats at home. I've gone up to 365# for 6 reps with no one home (no need for a spotter), so it is almost as safe as the gym -- except no people around. But , in case you over-extend yourself with that "extra rep", you just lower the bar to the safety stands and you are fine.

Wow....

Any thoughts on the Lat attachment? I'm debating that or a free standing pullup bar since that's more effective.
