Need help with diet in college.

p60

New member
You know what absolutely sucks?

Trying to take that perfect diet you had going in high school, and making it work in college.

Im running into a few problems:

first off, at the university im going to, you are required to purchase their meal plan if you live in the dorms. At first I figured, "oh thats not so bad, I can probably find something in the cafeteria that fits my needs"

then all of a sudden.... guess again. So far every day I've had a choice between 2 things:
1. Carbohydrates up the ass
2. Pure junk food

so basically i've been bringing food with me and eating it in the cafeteria, lol. tuna and oats.

I had a long talk about this with my parents, since the meal plan is worth around 1000 bucks, and they said that they didnt mind if I didnt eat at the cafeteria except for stuff like fruit, and on the occaisonal day that had something else that fit my diet.
so apparently they are okay with the money waste and will pay for half of the food I buy at the grocery store.

But this is still a dillema, because im a lot busier in college than i was in highschool, and i find myself constantly going back to my dorm just to eat my 6 friggin meals, it feels like i have to constantly worry about food.

the thing that really sucks tho and makes it complicated is that i dont have a kitchen. i have like a bowl, some silverware, and a sink that I walk down the hall to, and I have a tiny ass fridge in my room, that holds maybe 3 days worth of food, lol.

anyways this absolutely sucks.

my family has been tellin me that i would be a lot less stressed and crap if i just lived with the cafeteria food, but i dont know what kind of effect that will have on my health. they obviously dont know anything about protein needs, etc.

and everyone is suggesting i cut down from 6 meals a day, but im scared that my metabolism will get shot if I try that.

I dunno, i wanna look at least somewhat attractive all thru-out college, and im wondering how much rigidness i can afford to give up, if any.

damn - the worst part of this is that if you can't follow the right diet, your life is ruined.

do any of the dining halls have salad bars? maybe I was just lucky, but in college all of the dining halls had salad bars that had all kinds of things there - including tuna, eggs, cottage cheese, etc.
so you could usually manage something even on the worst days.

but for the most part - I think you would be WAY better off getting more of what many people refer to as "a firmer grasp on reality" and realizing that you can chill out about 10 million steps from where you are and life will continue to go on and you are likely to be a hell of a lot happier.

are you really religious?

Buy a 20 dollar foreman, and a ton of chicken... cook, eat, enjoy.
A blender and protein shakes help too.

no, i can follow it alright.
it would just really suck to follow it

like its a hell of a lot harder to do here, than it was back at home

the turkey at the grocery store sucks ass.
no supplement stores like GNC for 160 miles.
only clean carb around is oatmeal and fruit.

and no salad bar
the cafeteria is seriously empty of any healthy foods.
1000 bucks down the drain...

I just feel like a lazy undisciplined bastard if i dont keep up the nice diet I was doing.

p60 - I am in the exact same situation, i moved in yesterday. Eat the cleanest food in the cafeteria you can, but make sure you EAT ! i know a lot of people who went to school and either got real fat or got real skinny. Happy said it well, Im just trying to rationalize, accept it, and eat and get bigger. Bulk during school year, cut during summer when your home and have more control. What are your stats ?

gmanlax. i like that idea, bulk during the school year, cut during summer

right now im 165 lbs, 5'9" and around 10-11% bodyfat.
But I definately cannot afford to notch that bodyfat up any higher.

I muuuustt look attractive, at all costs.

alright, screw constant grocery shopping and shipping supplements from home (160 miles away) I think I'm just going to learn to drop my standards a little.

This will be a good test, to see what the human body can handle in terms of less than perfect food.

You can always get mom's credit card number and have protein shipped straight to your dorm, i plan on doing this. Do you drink ? Thats gonne be my biggest challenge here in college, far more than chicken nuggets and pizza. I know what you mean, gotta get big, but gotta get chics, too.

p60-
Give it a month. Once the fun stresses of class, etc. set in, you won't be so obsessed w/food. You weigh 160? Man, just eat the cafeteria food, but stay active. You are putting WAY too much emphasis on your diet. You oughta just try to enjoy college. And thank your parents for paying for it, too. Wish mine could help out more, but that's life. They've got their own problems to deal with.
Anyway, moral of the story: Don't obsess about the damn diet so much and try to enjoy college.

kid dynamite - thats some serious pressure your laying on me to drink !!! The ice cold handle of captain in my fridge is speaking to me !!!!!!!

Hey man, all I'm sayin' is don't obsess with a diet too much. If you wanna have a few drinks, go for it. I drink every once in a while when I know It will be worth it. Don't go and drink the handle alone, though. If you go to a kickin' party, have a beer or two, but most importantly... have a good time. **DMite

yeah im gonna try to focus on chicks more than boozing. .. gonna tryyy.during the day im a class act, but when the sun goes down . . ..

yea the beer is gonna be crazy. I think an important thing is to make friends with people with similar goals, and when you see them not drinking a lot, you wont feel as pressured to either. That said, I drink way to much, and yet i have an 8%bf. Three of my friends with the best bodies i know are heavy partiers... I think that unless genetics fucked you over, beer isn't gonna make a huge difference unless you're just pounding every night of the week.

I only got hammered a few times last year. Maybe like 5 or 6, and first semester I didn't drink at all until my last day of finals, because it was my 21st b-day party. But, if you count the first 17 hrs. I was at Spring Break, I drank enough to equal a good semester or two. The last 2 days of SBreak I was on straight water.

im not going to college to be a wet blanket. im gonna party hard, but make sure im eating a lot of food and working hard at the same time.

I just graduated earlier this month.. and I might have a little tip for you. Try to steer clear of beer as much as possible. If you gotta drink, aim for liquer.. u get drunk without as many empty calories. Captain and Diet.. the drink of choice.

Cap N Diet is good. I don't like beer too much, and for some reason I like the way diet soda tastes opposed to regular. Gin and Kool-Aid is good too, just don't drink too much, which is easy to do. Believe me, I know.

ha,

maybe i shoulda made this clear

I have NO intent of drinking at all in college. it is completely against my morals, and when I'm at parties, you can expect me to be the one guy there who isnt drinking,

that being said, I think I'm more concerned about a less than perfect diet screwing me over than tons of alcohol.

I wont get fat, i know that much. i just want to be ripped tho. I was at 9% earlier this summer, and it climbed back up when I messed up on my diet recently.
I'm working on at least stabilizing it. I think Im around 11% right now, and it sucks ass.
