1999 Mustang EFI 3.8V6 manual. Question: Car wont red line in neutral at 5500 rpm, sputters but wonts go over. Is this normal? Otherwise the car runs excellent. Any feedback greatly appreciated.

i'm not sure man, might want to look at fords website, did you buy it used? might be a safty toggle of some sort that some moran put on, my brother has a 99 4.6 and it sure doesnt do that man. i'v never heard of it before, could be something wrong with the engine or fuel system.

Its a rev limiter.
I think most new cars have that feature.
I cant rev past 3000 RPM's in neutrall either.

They're right. You have to reprogram your computer. Buy a hypertech. My stock limit was 5800 and is now 6800 with no top speed governer. I'm a chevy man, so there might be some programmer specifically for Fords, dunno.

yep, they nailed it, my GT had one, but the hypertech powerprogrammer moved it way up, i don't know if they make one for a V6 though.

rev limiter. on the other hand, why in the world would you want to rev the car to red line in neutral?

thanks for the resposes

I noticed something onced while opening her up getting on the hwy. I knew it wasnt a great idea but i just got the car and worried smethong serious was wrong. Thanx for allaying my fears.
I dlike a turbo package but with inst its about 5G

Bro, why waste your money making a v6 faster? Sell it, buy at least a GT. Or get a Z-28 and have real speed:D

You're entirely too fucking big to drive a v6 anyway

I have a '02 GT and so far I have put 4.10's and shorties on it and holy shit it is a screamer. Next is the exhaust, then the ram air, and supercharger with nitrous, plus things like underdrive, etc. Also will be putting on an eibach lowering kit (4 inches), and replacing the front and rear suspension and upgrading the brakes.

Chesty, although it will sound that way, I'm not talking shit because I know there are some nice GT's out there. Also, I personally think they look good modded out.

Anyway my point is that if you want a fast car that responds easily to simple mods buy a F-body like formula said. Before I did the serious stuff to mine(only had bolt-ons) I was spanking every Mustang on the road badly. Cobras, Cobra-Rs, Rosche(however its spelled). Now that I've got every cent of mine into it, I don't even waste my time with Mustangs unless they've got a blower sticking up. LT-1s and L-S1s are superior engines to anything Ford has made so far.

However, if you're willing to do everything that Chesty is planning on, then its a different story. Thats some serious shit.

True enough. I never liked Ford, but I have been impressed with the overall package. I did test drive a Pontiac Ram air, but given the extreme cost and the fact that the one I drove seemed rather poorly assembled, I went with the Ford.

I was rather bummed though as I really wantd that Ram Air.!

Ah the wonderful workmanship of the F-body. The engine is the best base motor I've dealt with, but the rest of my car is built like crap. The drivers window is jacked, parts of the dash are falling apart, etc, etc, etc. The Pontiacs are even worse for some reason.

Yep, that is why I went Ford. It was a better total package. I wish Mopar still had an affordable muscle car.

Rev limiters in most cars work by cutting and then restoring the RPM in increments of 50 (this is where you get the expression 'bouncing' off the rev limiter), some of them cut spark some cut fuel, in a blown/turboed car you do not want to cut fuel, you go for spark.

Do NOT rev the engine in neutral (no load), alot of people do this but it is hard on the engine.

Try stangnet.com or something like that, there are stang forums out there.

There is no such thing as a muscle car anymore.

Sort of true, I have a 94 Camaro, approximately 490 HP (411 SAE RW), no blower, no turbo, no stroker all NA (no nitrous either). Do my own work and programming.

Mustangs sound awesome, but the LS1s have the same firing order so a similar sound can be achieved, plus a 4.6L is a go kart to me (I owned a 97 Cobra, I know).

Hey fello Chevy dude, www.tunercat.com ! Screw Hyperjunk :D

If your OBD II you need to use LT1 Edit or wait for Tunercat, or go OBD I if its legal in your state (some states are testing the PCMs now). www.carputing.com

What are you talking about? Cars are getting faster, lighter, and stuffed with more horse power/torque then ever before without the displacement and gas guzzling.

Check out the stats on Vettes, the new Cobra (03), and various imports. Sure, many of them don't rumble but there's plenty of speed on the road, still.

Fuck, man...if a 500HP Viper isn't a muscle car, I don't know what is. I don't remember any production cars back in the day sportin that or a V10.

True, cars back in the days didn't put out all that much power, didn't have the same torque curves (EFI cleaned that up), didn't get the MPG (my 69 Firebird 400 was 9/12 MPG), heavier, etc etc

Cars today don't have the same character, but major improvements (can you say 14x6" wheels suck?).

BTW, if I didn't have an ignition miss :( I should have peaked around 6700 RPM, not 5900.

97-99 Mustang V8 suck ass. Get a 93-02 Fbody They are faster cars.

.....................its the 96-98's that are underpowered. 99 was a totally new 4.6 (acutally different heads and few other things) and any GT 95 and below was 5.0 (302).

The early GTs were 225 HP yep, blech. As far as the FBodies the LS1s are unbeatable, especially 2001 or better, but you have OBD II and a bunch of crap, more expensive parts due to all new engine, but it is top of the GM heap. I went with LT1 due to cost and not that much less HP with work, a 222/230 cam and good LS1 heads would put out the same RWHP as my car did though, my cam was about 10º more duration.
