My mom, who is 5'1 180 pounds needs to lose weight. Shes not intensly obease but needs to drop a good amount of pounds.

I know nothing about dieting because i've been a skinny dude all my life and i just eat everything possible to gain weight...

can anyone point me in the right direction? how many calories should she be consuming a day? carbs? fat?

Just tell her to clean up her diet. She'll drop some weight just doing that. Once her weight loss slows, she can add cardio and start tracking calories and macros, etc.

A lot of women don't like eating a lot of meat (protein) so their diets aren't the same as a weightlifter. The number one thing is to cut back on the "bad" carbs and try to eat more of the good carbs. More vegetables, wild rice, and potatoes and less white rice/bread, anything with refined sugar, etc.

Most people know what healthy food is....not everyone knows that some carbs are better than others. My parents didn't seem to have a clue until we discussed it.

I think you got good advice here. Does your mother does any exercice? like walking? Maybe it is difficult to count calories, and maybe more realistic (at least at the beguining) to clean the diet (like Kid and mlomker said).
Concerning suplements maybe some fish oil would be ok.

Add Exercice

Chances are that if she adds 30 minutes of cardio 4 times per week she will lose weight with little or no change to her diet. Many "average" people who are moderately overweight will gain more benefit from increasing calorie expenditure over reducing calorie intake.

She should lay off the sugar and try to eat several small meals per day rather than one or two big ones (this alone will increase metabolism). Don't forget, lots of water.

If that doesn't work get her into ketosis and throw in DNP :)

Recommend 5 simple steps to her that dont seem too radical like:

1. Eat Breakfast (She probably doesnt)
2. FIBER!
3. Good Fats and EFA's
4. Take a walk around the block each day.
5. Eat Fruits and Veggies

It worked for my Mom, she was very resistant to my suggestions until I made them seem more moderate and simple yet still allowing her to eat her current diet just modified a bit. I also found that my Mom was restricting her calories way too low and when she was eating, it was only at the end of the day, her metabo was probably really slow.

the diet is not the only way to go...

1]diet
* less carbs (only complex carbs aka low GI)
* less fats and only "good" fats (olive, flax, canola oil)
* more vegetables and fiber
* more water
* lean protein (chicken, fish,...)

2]no/less alcohol

3]more physical activities (walking, cardio, swimming)

4]keep a food log

5]have a look at this site

6]don't try to lose fat very quiclky, it will take weeks/months

Definitely agree with the cardio guys. Even some walking around the block each night, fast or slow, will help a lot.

I also agree with all these recommendations.

Cardio is probably number one. Just walking 45 minutes a day or a few days a week will help her shed significant lardage. Especially if she walks briskly, a lady in my neighborhood lost a TON of weight (I don't know her personally but last year she was obese and this year she looks average) and I always see her powerwalking every day, swinging her arms and all.

She should eat a healthy breakfast or just breakfast at all if she currently isnt.

Ditch soda pop and most sugar. I'd advise to ditch all sugar but for many people this is too extreme. A little dessert after dinner will be OK. There's a diet called Sugarbusters which some older friends of mine have recommended in which you can eat sugar once a day, during a 1 hour time period. Supposedly it works because your insulin levels are not spiking up and down all day, the one moderate spike after eating a sugary dessert will be blunted by the dinner you just ate. Or, that's the theory anyway. I think its more of an "older person" type diet for non BBs.
