Need Common Questions for FAQ

Any suggestions? I will do one FAQ and make it a sticky on this board.

Some questions I can handle:

1) Fat Loss and Cardio
2) Buying Running Shoes
3) Results of different types of Cardio
4) Buying Bike Gear
5) Events and Training For Them
6) Good Books/Media/Training Programs
7) Good Gear
8) Good Nutrition

Any other common questions? I think most of the Q on this board are about Item number 1 and it would be nice to jus refer folks there.

maybe one could be about the pains of running...such as shin splints. Something explaining what kind of pain is good, bad, and worse. When to take time off and when to push through and what is to be expected for someone who is new to this world. Hope that helps.

Since we are in this forum, how about what kind AS would help the endurance athlete?

looks good man. as it was said already, maybe a little bit about common injuries like shin splints. maybe something about "alternative" types of cardio (swimming, jump rope, etc.)? is it worth talking about triathlons?

Hiya,

Pavlslov - Sorry bro, the AS stays on the AS board.

Killah - shin splits good idea - though the ultimate answer is to see a sports doctor because there are a lot of different things that get called 'shin splints' and they happen in different parts of the shin for different reasons. For some people, it means they need to ease off. I only get htem when I *don't* go running for a few days.

Alternate exercise types? Sure. Maybe a discussion of what kinds get your HR where. Rope jumping is alright - but I lack the coordination to do it myself.

Perhaps something about the myths of fat loss?

1) Spot reduction
2) Sweating equals fat loss

I'm currently having a discussion with a guy on a boxing forum. He's a moderator over there and gives people advice. Bad advice that is. Someone asked about an exersize for the "lower abs", he tells them to do leg raises (leg raises target the iliopsoas, there's no such thing as the lower abs). Someone wants to get rid of fat, he tells them to run, wearing a trashbag to maximize sweat (only resulting in more water and salt loss). He told people to do skull crushers to train the shoulders (turned out he did not know what a skull crusher was). He's talking about turning fat into muscle and bullshit like that. Someone asked for a workout, he gives them one consisting of isolation exersizes only. Someone asks about nutrition, he tells them to eat lots of carbs, including junkfood ("you gotta put on mass man").

The worst part is that people actually believe him, they think I'm a wise ass for setting him straight all the time.

Here's his reasoning for the trashbag idea:

ok man, allow me to explain.
when you sweat, your body uses some of its heat energy to evaporate the sweat from your skin.
however, if the sweat cant evaportate, like if the trashbag is holding it onto your skin it keeps using heat energy to evaporate the sweat.

your body will start to break down energy stores to get rid of the sweat, but its not going. eventually your body is gonna start breaking down fat to remove that darn sweat.

you see how it works?

Does anyone have a nice article about sweating and fat loss? Because I already explained him why it does not work that way but I think he needs some extra convincing.

Don't bother trying to explain. It's like whackamole. Smack him down, another comes up - even on this board. You're best off just focusing your energies on yourself and those in your circle of influence.

Re: Trash bags, it's not going to help you loose fat. There are certain, specific conditions where the body uses fat as a fuel source. It's not related to 'sweat'.
