Need car help ASAP!!!!

Ok, here is the situation, I pulled into the driveway and went to tap the brakes, they went all the way to the floor - I was only going about 2 mph so no big deal - I put it in park and pumped them a few times and they recovered. I called my mechanic and he said it sounds like the master brake cylinder going.

My neighbor checked the brake fluid and he said it looked a little low. I haven't seen any leaks at all - even threw a cardboard box under it and let it sit.

So now I am scared shitless to drive it anywhere. How can I avoid getting ripped off? I know this guy is cool as hell and he has NEVER ripped me off before but he can't tkae me until Friday - so if I have to take it to someone else to get it fixed how can I avoid getting fucked?

Sorry but I am so freaked out right now....

i wouldnt drive it,like harmonic said it could be a loose connection but it definatly relates to the master cylinder, dont risk it this shit just goes and your fucked

got a parking brake, pull it next time if need be, or gear down also. It is on your back brakes which are probably drums. If all else fails forward your gear to me

check the nipples under the rear end and get a freind to help you "bleed" the brakes, and pump the air out of them,,,go get a do it yourself book

OK, I wasn't aware my car had nipples... where exactly are they? When I put the car in park and pumped the brakes the "pressure" came back. Also, does the brake light come on just when you use the parking break or when you have brake trouble? I am so car stupid....

Beast is right they are relativley cheap to replace, I had a reconditioned onee put in for 275 about a year ago. Now I got to get a cv joint for my other car. That or just start getting rid of some of this stuff!

Ripped Off

Like the others say it's probably just the master cylinder or some air in the brakelines. Course someone could be fucking with you by opening one of the brake lines and letting some air in. That sounds like something I'd do when I was a kid. Or stuff a couple of potatos up someones tail pipe.

But I don't think you have to worry about getting ripped off judging from your profile. I'm assuming the info you posted there is correct so just find a shop with a little guy and look real threatening when you take your car in.

So I shouldn't drive it anywhere until I get this fixed right? Hate to sound like a stupid female asking car questions... but I also don't want to end up road kill.

Better get it towed. The brake light SHOULD come on if a) parking brake is on; or b) there is a brake system malfunction (i.e. what you are experiencing). If you're feeling lucky, you can try driving it to a shop, but I'm glad I'm not in CA! Usually, insurance or AAA or somthing like that will cover your tow ( i have 'towing reimbursement' or something like that on my auto insurance).... Hope this helps, and PS, always enjoy your posts....

Better safe than sorry - get it towed to a workshop and get it checked out by a mechanic.

Just my $0.02 :)

It is better to tow it in because do you want the helpless feeling of not being able to stop and watching in horror as you run into or over someone? One word, LIABILITY, so tow it and have the car checked out at a brake shop preferably . An ounce of prevention is worth every penny so you are safe and the public is safe.If you had an accident and they found out you drove the car after having known that it was having brake problems well you would be in deep shit. When you fix it ask to keep the old part and you can get it checked out by another party if you really want to know if you got taken. Try MIDAS, they may be high, but you will have a better warranty than the local shop who can stick it to you and not back up their work!!

gotta agree with the other guys, sounds like classic master brake cylinder failure.

I had my master fail about 45 miles per hour downhill. What a thrill it was. I did get the brakes to pump up and made it home but I was scared shitless to say the least. I took the day off and got it to the shop and told my mechanic about it and yes indeed it was a bad master, he showed me the piston and the seal was shot. I mean I was surprized that it did not give me any warning. GET IT FIXED!

If you are operating a vehical with such defects and you get in accident, if investigated and found you drove it that way you can be facing a felony.

Could be one of many things.. If it is not leaking then it may not be the master cylinder. Could be a collapsed brake line.. Pop the hood and look at the master cylinder where it bolts to the firewall. If it is wet there than the cylinder is done. Either way, call a tow truck and have it fixed by a pro.....

Peace,

LB

OK heres the deal......don't drive it anywhere, if the master cylinder fails...you are S.O.L.....AND DO NOT BLEED THE BRAKES, AIR WILL JUST KEEP GETTING INTO THE LINES BECAUSE OF YOUR MASTER CYLINDER. GET YOUR MASTER CYLINDER REPLACED...BLEEDING YOUR BRAKES IS HARDER THAN IT SEEMS...YOU NEED 2 PEOPLE AND IT SUCKS....THE GUY IS NOT RIPPING YOU OFF ABOUT THE MASTER CYLINDER, BUT IF IT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER GET A SECOND OPINION.....IF YOU NEED ANY ADVICE E-MAIL OR PM ME
