Nan, and other computer tech people

What use will the computer have? just internet? photo editing(photoshop), video editing, gaming, just office work, movie playing, etc do you have a screen size preference?

I think 15.6" is the smallest screen I'd want. If I play any games it wouldn't be anything that needed a lot of power. I think 3ghz and a GB of memory would be enough for anything I'd ever do on it.

toshiba laptops are quality. i have one from '99 that still runs strong. they had some problems in early/mid 2000's, but they have since improved.

Excellent, thanks. That's exactly the kind of review I wanted. Long term reliability. Pretty much none of the consumer reviews you find on the sales sites are written any time after the first 6 months of ownership.

I am using a Toshiba as I type and they make quality laptops. This is my third one and I love them. I did have problems with a huge 17 inch one a few years back from overheating but that was 2 years into it and I use laptops all day and abuse them.

I have also used IBM (now Lenovo) and they are top quality but too expensive.

If you are looking for a low-cost, not so powerful laptop get an Acer. I got one for $229 a while back and it was perfect for traveling and doing work on the go. 15.1 inches, thin and the battery lasted 8 hours.

Also, Toshiba has the best service for repairs out of all of them.

Stay away from Dell. What a nightmare. Horrible quality and tech support. Toshiba had my box the next day and had it back to me in three days! (That was the one that had the heating problem). I don't know how they did it that quick. Dell took over a week. The one Acer I had never broke down. eMachines is horrible too. It lasted two months and they gave me the runaround with the return. I ended up getting 'credit' and got a desktop (also an eMachine) that died within a year.

I've used Compaq and HP at work and they were so-so. The quality is not that superior for the price you pay.

I want to spend a bit more and get a machine that will last. The price point and features on those Toshiba Satellite A665 series machines is spot on. The part about the quick service seals the deal for me. Sounds awesome.

you might also want to get as an extended service warranty as possible.... those suckers are worth it...

I bought a dell laptop that I customized, 2.4 gig dual core, 3 gig RAM. Ended up spending around $1800 I believe. This was a few years back, still using it.

Get as much RAM as possible. I shoulda upped it to the max of 4 gigs, regret that. It's cheap, so just max it out.

I have had some overheating issues while gaming. I did buy the 3 year on site warranty, which I've used once. I'd recommend it if you're buying a laptop that is pretty big $$$. They have to haul their ass to your place instead of dealing with BS shipping or taking it somewhere.
