My programming class hates me

After reading a post on my class's message board from several students asking for extensions for the assignment due today, despite the fact that we've had five complete days to work on it.

Someone then posted, agreeing, "One more day sounds good."

My response?

"Five weren't enough? Let's make everything due in July. We can FedEx our assignments to the teacher after the semester is over!"

Someone responded with: "What a dick"

=(

I thought I was polite.

Stupid class.

they comfort each other's procrastination by agreeing w/ one another....therefore making it right :D

Warik, you crack me up. you sure do come across as a dick if people don't know you - I thought the same thing when I first was reading this board. now I know you are cool, but you crack me up.
(and I agree with you - I never understood how people couldn't get the shit done - now I know they were out drinking and having a good time while I was at home doing work, but that is why they are pumping gas and I'm rolling in money... that's my job, to roll in money, it sounds good, but it gets old.)

Happy, yea really dude. It's ridiculous. I'm here in the library on my laptop right now and some people in my class keep asking me shit. They have the STUPIDEST mistakes (and not even syntactical mistakes, they have "hi I'm on drugs" logic mistakes).

The assignment was a simple encryption program. User enters a message, user enters a keyword, individual ASCII values of message letters shifted based on keyword's letter's distance from 'a'. Assigned Thursday, due today, people still not done. I finished that shit Thursday night and had it printed, saved to disk, and packaged in the envelope ready to hand in.

Why do these people insist on taking a SIX WEEK programming *III* course when they clearly don't have the skills or motivation required to do so?

My friend is sitting next to me... violating the library rule of silence by laughing his ass off at every post I made. rofl

what language do you have to do it in? I could do that in javascript in under 10 mins... in fact... jesus, I wish I were still in school.

I day you should piss the losers off some more, but knowing american schools these days, someone will just shoot you - and we don't want that to happen.

oh well, rest assured that you are smart and will do well in future classes.
I'm currently the retard at work that doesn't get our Java shit - I can program Java no problem, but what I'm having trouble with is the J2EE deployment standards that are different for ever App server and I feel reall stupid trying to figure this shit out.

It's in Java, Happy. Finished that shit the evening it was assigned and the only reason it took me so long (i.e. more than 10 minutes) was because I did it according to the specifications instead of the more efficient way... =)

runner,

Very funny. =) Doesn't really matter WHAT university you go to, 90% or more of every programming class is going to be full of scrubs. It's not like Psychology or English (sorry badkins!! :)) where you can just memorize a book and do well... but SOMEHOW these fucks in the programming classes keep advancing. I bet they all cheat off each other. Pathetic.

-Warik

Warik,

Life has a way of shaking things out.

Stay true to yourself and fuck these motherfuckers.

Hapy,

You're right about the rolling in $ part. gets old.

well, there are certainly more idiots at most "lower ranked" schools than there are at the prestigious ones, in programming classes and elsewhere, so if you're takin' classes at dade county comm. college, you're not gonna' find too many einsteins beside you.

runner,

I'm not at the community college. =)

The Varnsen,

That's kind of the idea. I don't like humans. My goal in life is to find the perfect woman (i.e. my female equivalent) and move into a secluded area of the country where I will have to have as little human contact as possible. They truly disgust me.

warik, the more I read what you write, the more I like you. we are very similar.

were you allowed to use regular expressions or the split() function? shit, I don't have JBuilder on this machine or I'd look to see if split is even built in - I know it is in perl and vbscript and javascript - I have trouble keeping track of what can do what.
either of those would have allowed that to take about 5-10 mins to write depending on how fast you type.

You seem like a kid who was abused by other kids troughout school and you´ve created your own little world where you feel special... You feel like the world works around you and for you; By isolating from the other you´ve also created a big ego!!!

Happy,

We were pretty much allowed to use anything. The prof. wanted the individual characters shifted based on the characters of the keyword, plus he wanted us to destroy the spaces in the string and create encrypted blocks of text 5 characters large in its place. It was all pretty simple, but took a little longer than I had wanted it to take because I had to comply with his specifications which involved having a basic encryption cipher superclass and two extended classes for different encryption methods.

Still, it's REALLY sad that it takes these people more than five days to finish. I'm predicting MANY empty seats in class tomorrow. lol

I can't wait till the next assignment. Today in class the professor was like: "ok guys I know the first two assignments were pretty easy... that's only cause it's the beginning of the course. The next one is going to kick your... you know what." People were like: 'the first two were easy??????????????????" LOL THIS IS GOING TO BE HILARIOUS!!

varnsen, I don't know if you are talking to me or not - but I can tell you that the voices in my head don't like what you are saying. the dragon isn't happy at all.

and warik, did the prof explain that type of encryption can be broken by hand VERY quickly and that it is esentially worthless other than something to prevent someone from being able to read it off the page without a bit of work first?

last year I wrote a dhtml minesweeper when I was bored at work, I wonder where that is now - I think I'm going to fix that up a bit and add it to my page. sorry, random train of thought since I'm seeing assignments.

and hey, warik - do you think you could forward all of your assigments in your comp sci classes to me? I'm a major geek and actually like doing that shit, so that would be fun for me.
I know - hand into L symbol and raised to head. does anyone even do that anymore?

Uh, actually I haven't been picked on since I was like 10.

I've created my own little world where people aren't incompetent. You should try it. It makes life much more enjoyable.

Actually, I feel like the world works against me. Can't you tell by my posts? Take a literary analysis class - it may be of great help to you.

If this were true, why would you think that I'd care?

No, he didn't. How would someone break that without knowing the keyword? If the blocks of text are chopped into equally sized blocks and the keyword is unknown, the text should essentially seem completely random.

Besides, he said that the point of the assignment was to let us fool around with String, StringBuffer, StringTokenizer, and the concepts of Inheritance and Polymorphism... not to write a killer encryption program to be used by a real company and stuff.

Too bad, the latter would have been more fun.

Count to 30 and then check your e-mail.

if you really want to know how easy it is to break - I can give you a big ass list of books to read. by hand, fairly easy - by computer - VERY easy. seconds if that.

I'll now check my e-mail. thanks man.

and then bedtime for me. more work tomorrow (I'm actually starting to enjoy work now since I'm starting to get "work" done there again)

I can read books in bed though.
uhh, websites... shit - I used to have a ton of these... give me sec:

I can read websites in bed... why do you think I bought a laptop? For working outside the home or something? haha lol who does that???

-Warik

I seem to have all of my bookmarks on my work computer and not here (one sign that I was doing far too much "playing" at work - I was writing a lot of code to break the famous Poe cipher - I broke it, but 3 weeks after it was alreay broken unbeknownst to me... bitches).

what you want to look for though is the "Vigenere" cipher and the ensuing ways to break it. been around since... like 1600's or some shit. some french dude was big into it.
I highly recommend The Code Book as a fun (albeit geeky) read on the history of cryptography.

funny you mention that. I'm moving in with my girlfriend in a few months and I'm going to set up a wireless network as well as run some rj45 around the house since it is small. that way I can get a loptop and be wherever I want (read: toilet) and still be all geeked out.

I hate macs, but part of me sort of wants one of those titanium things and then toss linux on there, but I hate the one button mouse.
I'll probably get the biggest Sony Vaio. viao. whatever it is.

Its all cool warik, i was only joking around... ;)
But excuse me, when you say you will be successfull in life whatever it takes you don´t seem like you feel the world is against you...:bawling:

LMFAO@Warik

You sound like such a NERD!!!!! :)

Nothing wrong with being intelligent. Just because
you're more intelligent than other people doesn't
mean you have to isolate yourself.
Intelligence is not a life-sentence.
As human beings WE HAVE THE BIOLOGICAL NEED
for SENSORY INPUT .
Eventually, if you disregard people in general you'll just
get stupider.
IDEAS are what stimulate you. People are DYNAMIC
while books are STATIC.

When I come to Florida I'm dragging you to a salsa Club.
Hehe....

Just try and be nice to the less intelligent Homo Sapiens,
you'll feel better. I know I do. :)

Godspeed

eek....dont get a sony, they will charge you throught the nose for anything extra you want. you probably already know this though. i had the choice betwen a vaio and a toshiba, the toshiba has saved me a lot of money, it just looks like a pile of turd :(

and i increasingly use it to work in bed, or while watching TV. i will use it when i leave home next year.

Webster defines "nerd" as "an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; especially : one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits".

I prefer the term: "geek" =)

Varnsen,

I was only joking around too. =)

Now, in regard to me saying I will be successful regardless and not seeming like the world is against me... congrats, let me introduce you to my ego. =) Say hello, ego, this is my buddy The Varnsen.

"Hi, Varnsen!"
