my new job, part 2

stilleto

ELITE MENTOR
EF VIP
so its getting weirder and weirder.

i attended a meeting today, which i was really happy about to learn and do SOMETHING. in it, i was actually given something to do. but not until MARCH.
and even then, its not much.

i was tempted to ask "what should i be doing UNTIL then?" but it wasn't the right time.
after the meeting, my boss disappeared, and I found my way to my department i'm supposed to help manage. they didn't need any managing. they don't need a thing. they are the most effecient bunch of people i've ever seen. i kinda felt bad for interrupting them.
I found my way back to my office and was finally getting a computer, so i spent the rest of the morning adjusting the resolution and looking at the company website, then i went food shopping, was in the breakroom for a while, got myself some coffee, raided the supply cabinet, and then left...

when i got home, i had a big gift basket waiting for me. fresh pineapple, kiwi, avacado, preservative free nuts and coffee, and trailmix.
the note was from my new company and it said "welcome to the team. you ROCK."

???? I DO???? i think i'm being set up for murder or something.

Are you getting paid good money for doing absolutely nothing? If so, can you get me a job there? lol

well... yeah. not outrageous money, but certainly not bad.
they seem to be hiring a lot of scientists, all of whom need background checks. and no, this isn't government work.

i've thought about it and i have a theory as to why i was hired, but i think tomorrow i AM going to talk to the department about what is needed to be done. god i hope they come up with SOMETHING.
if they say "no, everything is fine", i'm going to ask if anyone needs me to run an errand or anything.

i've been thinking about it, and maybe i'll make THEM run my errands. I don't know what i'll do instead, but i'll think of something.

Hey! I am in charge of the shooting around here.

Stilleto, start sending incoherent memos around the office. This shouldn't be hard for you.

are you complaining? sounds like a dream

you can be that manager that's only seen aimlessy walking around with a dazed look on your face, occasionally eating something

this might be a reality show and you're the unsuspecting star.

Tommorrow they introduce you to the abandoned newborn lab monkeys they want you to wet-nurse, and then Alan Funt jumps out of a cake naked and sings happy birthday while he pees in your coffee. You watch.

You need to read The Firm by John Grisham....several times.

SOOOOOOO...
today the manager was out and I went to my department and asked if we could have an informal meeting.
they all said they were busy, which i could see they were.

I said it would only take a few minutes.

i started by complimenting them and telling them that in the short time i've been here, I can see that they are a super efficient group and I'm really impressed on how well they work together.

then i said that part of my job is to assist the manager, and to help them as a team work better, so i would like to know what, if anything, i can do to help.

one long haired, fat guy says, "do you even know our names?"

and because its not like they wear name tags or have desk plaques, and its not like I got any information on my department at all (or any info on ANYTHING), and since my office is like a football field away, I said, "honestly... no".

then, they got up and walked away.
:(

I sat there for a minute, then called them all back in. I explained that 'I'M HERE TO HELP' and they all seemed a bit resentful, which i had a feeling was because they seemed to be doing quite well without me.
they agreed, apologized, and told me in not quite as many words that they think their manager doesn't do a thing except take credit for their good work, and the few times she's been caught not having done her job, she said it was because she was so over worked.

which, is exactly what I figured.
then i got them all laughing when i told them about my first day and the fact that I didn't think i could find my way back to my office by myself and that I don't have a phone on my desk and therefore, have no way to call anyone about it.
they were cool after that.

but i still didn't have anything to do.

it's something, anyway. as long as you find a legitimate place to fit in and contribute soon. otherwise, they will almost certainly start to resent you or not take you seriously.

weird, though. hopefully you get the direction you need. otherwise, quit.
