My Long Lost Cousin

FreeballinDC

Dumper Humper
My mom called me last night with some family news. It seems that my uncle (mom's brother), had an affair in between his marriages, and fathered a child out of wedlock. He told no one in the family. The only other person that knew is his current wife.

The child he fathered is a 15 year old girl living in Kansas. She knows most of the situation, because her mother told her. The girl has spoken with my uncle several times over the years, but they never met due to the backlash my uncle expected from his current wife.

My sister met her this past weekend, and says she is a wonderful girl, and could easily fit in with our family. We are already plotting how to get her to come to Thanksgiving in Texas, or Christmas in Washington state.

I am excited and overwhelmed at the same time. I knew my uncle was no saint, but thought he could at least keep his family matters in order. All this time, he had this secret that he thought he couldn't share with anyone.

I hope this girl is willing to be apart of our family (as screwed up as it sometimes gets), as much as we want her to be apart of it.

I am floored.

Wow - that's crazy bro. It's cool that you guys are making an attempt to make her part of the family. Good luck with that. What does your uncle's current wife have to say about this?

PS -I'd hit it (someone had to say it...).

Good for you man. At least the rest of the family appears willing to do what your uncle wasn't man enough to do himself. Being alienated from half their family is hard on anyone, especially a child

Killah - forget Oprah, I'm heading to Dr Phil.

JA - I had a long conversation with my sister last night, and she was pissed at my uncle for keeping this a secret for so long. I told her not to be too mad, because we don't have all the facts on what transpired.

But the more I think about it, the more I am seeing my sisters side. I'm getting pissed because he didn't have the balls to own up to it. But again, I don't know the whole story, so I gotta check myself.

LOL. That would be my first reaction - getting pissed at the uncle for not taking responsibility. You are right - you should get the full story before jumping to any conclusions. Have you spoke to him, you think he will tell the family what is up?

From what I understand, he supported her financially as much as he could without his current wife finding out. I think he would send her mother money for support. Through all of this, the mother has not once asked for child support, nor has she soured the daughters relationship with my uncle.

She's the one that needs the bronze star. Raising a kid as a single mom, and knowing you could take the father to the cleaners, but not doing it? She's the one I really want to meet.
