My Daughter Is Thinking about Buying the New VW Beatle Are they any good?

curling

New member
Since she has got a job now she wants one. Are they good cars and how long do they last? Or would ya'll advise her to get something else.

of course not. its overpriced.

Its a charm car. piece of shit that people find cute. Just like

Audi TT
New Mini Cooper

they´re gadgets.

Just compare a new beatle to other cars that cost the SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY
it will be very obvious

piece of shit = vw

ill sell her my 2004 acura rsx s (all stock and its blue) to her for cheap as shit (only 12k miles )

After it's been wrecked???

Piece of shit. Mini Cooper and Audi A3 are better choice. The New Beatle is overpriced and far form the original concept (RWD, rear engine, air cooled vs. FWD, front engine, water cooled).

Audi A3 and VW Beetle are mechanically and structurally identical. And the A3 is going to be outside the financial reach of a 19 year old girl.

The Beetle will be okay, it's just a VW Golf in drag. She'd be a lot better off in a Civic, but then every time she sees a Beetle on the road the "what ifs" will be running through her head. The reliability record for the VW is only so-so, but if she's got her heart set on it, and if she has the money, I say let her go for it. There is some risk involved, but she'll either have some trouble and learn a valuable life lesson, or else she'll luck out. If she does have trouble, well, that's what warranties are for.

As a parent you can feel safe, though, the VW has an excellent crash safety record.

Nice post Mr db.

I say guide her towards the Honda s2000 or some other sportier, Japanese car.

What was that one Honda that was pretty small and the top coudl fit in the trunk? Those are equally if not more impractical, and that's obviously what she wants (impractical, cute vehicle).

S2000 = too much car for her... those ride pretty stiff and not a great daily driver but fun none to less

last year of it too!

wtf!?

I have a passat vw and its runs fucking great. Had it for 3 years (it was brand new) and not a single problem with it.

VW are reliable, just don't get anything earlier than 2000.

Yer probably right.

What was that other little piece of shit?

After the prelude but before the s2000?

(1) The S2000 is $34,000
(B) The S2000 has a 9000 RPM redline, and nothing much happens below 5000, you gotta keep the revs up to get anything out of it. Not a good car for a 19 year old girl, great car for a serious driver.

new civic si ? now about 200 hps w/ 6 spd not quite out for sale yet

prelude's werent bad but now honda has the 2 door accord w/ 6 spd manual about 250 ponies from a 3.0 litre ..those arent to shabby at all

imo for her if she wants a realible convertible get her a toyota salara convrtible (total bitch bucket but good chic cars... safe, fun and will last)

You're thinking of the Civic Del Sol. That was the replacement for the late, lamented CRX. It was a Civic with two seats, and a removable "Targa" top. The VTEC version was pretty hot for a 4-banger, but still looked like a "girl's car".

An A3 2.0T cost almost the same and has more room. And correct me if I'm wrong but the Beetle is made in Mexico, not the A3...

Base model A3 is $25.4 in the USA. Base Beetle is $17.7K.

Yeah, Beetles are assembled in Mexico. So?

my ex wife bought a brand new one (beetle) it was in the shop more than on the road...literally fell apart...my son had a HP Jetta turbo that was awesome...his friends with HP cars run alot of VW GTI, GOLFs, JETTA ...HONDA's Audi- much better choices tho...Beetle's are junk...seriously.

sorry you'r eon your own from here curling.

I don't know enough, I just thought of this because I've been seeing one in my neighborhood, it's Japanese, seems like a car a girl would like, and is definitely superior in terms of reliability to a VW Beetle.

Well with all the issues VW had with some of their cars (always those made in mexico, not Wolfsburg production) then I guess it should raise a flag. Quality control is not the same over there. Hell, just look at the difference between the ML350/500 (only Benz made in the US) and the rest of the brand...

the new passat with the steerible headlights are awesome haha i'd but it for the head lights alone the air conditioned glove box is really odd though!

2 reasons not to get a beetle...

their hitler cars (very true)
and you'd have to worry about domestic violence with her boyfriend saying "ha ha slug bug" and hitting her...

VW has made Golfs, Jettas, and Beetles in Mexico. Due to capacity issues, they stopped doing Golfs there and for the last few years the Golfs sold in the USA came from Wolfsburg. No difference in quality from the Mexican ones. No difference between VW and Audi reliability, and all Audis come from Germany. VW quality is just spotty in general these days.

BMW doesn't seem to have any more trouble with the Z3/Z4, X5, and X3s made in Alabama, vs. the rest of the line that comes from Bavaria.

There's no relation at all between the new Beetle and the one designed in the 1930s, apart from the badge on the hood. Yeah, Hitler commissioned the design for the first Beetle, but Ferdinand Porsche had been working on it before then and just lucked into finding a sponsor. The current Beetle has nothing to do with Porsche's design apart from some superficial styling similarities. The original Beetle was a rear-engined car with an air-cooled flat-4 engine, swing arm rear suspension, and a torsion-bar trailing-arm front suspension. The New Beetle is a front-engined front-wheel-drive car with a water-cooled inline-4 engine (or inline-5 for 2006), Macpherson strut front suspension, a multi-link rear suspension, and a hatchback. There are no conceptual similarities apart from four wheels.

I gotta agree with Zebra44 on this one. The Bug is a turd on wheels, and the RSX is an excellent car for the money (pre-owned).

Del Sol.....some slutbag I dated in High School had a lime green one. That was one ugly f'n car.

I did not know this. Interesting stuff. I guess their are some plusses from wasting all my time here.

I work for Volkswagen and since I do and know so much about all there Cars!!!!!

I say Hell no!!!! If you need any info just ask I have a ton!

I have a friend that has one and no problems with it as far as I know (it is at least 5 years old though) Also it was crashed a few times and still works fine (and no significant injuries to the driver or passenger)

But other than that one person, I have no idea.

ok this is how you know if you are going to get a good VW

Some vw are made in Mexico,Germany,Brazil

Look at the Vin # if it starts with a "W" it was made in Germany. If it starts with a 3 it was made in Mexico and if it starts with a 9 it was made in Brazil.

Audi is the same as a VW. They all come in here with the same problem.

Can you get me a deal on an R32? Ill trade in my 2003 20th Anniversary GTI for it. Only 20,000 miles!

Preferably this one http://img18.exs.cx/img18/3190/9402.jpg

;)

My MIA that lives with us has a base 2004 blue beetle.
Base model trim but it for some reason has the Monsoon kick ass stereo
in it that she can't at all appreciate.. LOL

I have driven it twice for oil changes and was slightly emasculated due mostly
to the friggin flower vase shit on the dash.

Even though it is a base trim and tiny 4 cyl, it does drive like a typical German engineered car.. Surprised me with its Very Tight Steering, Suspension and very fun to drive with good torque at all speeds for a 2 liter engine.

VW tends to Over Engineer everything on their vehicles which can tend to cause little things to break in the car like switches, knobs and whiz bang WoW stuff vs the engine or transmission stuff IMO..
Reliability is average but I again say they are fun to drive

It came standard with a neato soft foldable solar electric panel that plugs into the cigg lighter to trickle charge the batt..

Love the Cool Blue Dash lights and that switch blade ignition/door key...

Get a Civic

Your link did not work!!

beings that there were only 5000 made in the united states it will be a little hard to find one. We had 5 here not too long ago.

If you want one that bad I can have some people look for one. What color? Black, Red, Silver or Blue?

But I have to say that is one of the nice cars that VW makes ( quick as he@!)

R32 is not presently available in America, and it's my understanding that when the A5 Golf finally comes here, the new R32 is not in their US marketing plan. I think 2004 was the last year for it here.
