My coworker was telling me today that if you can prove you have Indian blood, you will get....

You don't just get registered. You have to have get your mother and grandmother (I think it is far back as to 1/2 certified blood line) registered as well. As least so they can establish a path of your geneaology. But only direct descends. Like you>> your mother>> grandmother. If you have sisters or brothers you don't have to register them because they are same percentage as you. (technically)

The only real benefit to getting registered is if you want to apply for a job in the casino. Their IT department and marketing department pays very well.

I know for a fact that registered Souix indians in NC get a percentage of casino proceeds. Well, I at least know that a Souix friend of mine told me that she did.

I also know that there are lots of scholarships for Native Americans, too. I could have gotten more scholarships if I had been able to document my heritage. (Before anyone bitches, I went to college and law school on academic scholarships and not on minority scholarships)

A lot of free govt. benefits regardless of what percentage of Indian blood you have? I thought you had to be at least 1/8? My great grandmother was half cherokee and it would be easy to prove I think. Anyone know about this?
This is sort of came up in discussion in the other Native American thread, the short answer is:

BULLSHIT. This is a myth, an urban legend.

My husband is a member of the Iroquois nation (he is a card carrying Mohawk, in other words). He don't get nuthing. The only "benefits" he has is an entitlement to live on an acre of land on the reservation. All he could ever do is LIVE on it, he cannot sell it or otherwise profit from it and upon his death the land reverts to the tribe.

In terms of college, about the ONLY benefit I know of is there's a CHANCE that you might have an easier time getting into some colleges if they're having trouble making their minority quotas.

Other tribes have different situations, but there are, as far as I, my husband, and my father in law's wife have been able to find, NO benefits from the Federal Government earmarked for Native Americans.

And if anybody knows of something and is going to tell me I'm wrong, please, by all means, point me to the government agency/website, I have several members of my husband's family who would love a hook up!

When they apply to college Muscle Mom, made sure that they mark their nationality as Native American. I had the financial aid departments telling me about tons of scholarships when I was in school, MM. It is not an urban myth. Those scholarships are out there. I'm not going to spend lots of time today to find them but I know that they are. Also, if you buy those scholarship listing books at the bookstore, there are some listed in those for minority scholarships.

they're there, but so are scholarships for minorities, disabled, gay, you name it. You can apply but very few are given per year - so you're better off applying for student aid.

to put it in perspective: even rez ndns' have to save up to go to college or beg their tribe to give them a loan.

funding for ndn schools is abysmal. So you can assume how little ndn scholarships must be. The Govt doesn't spend too much on them, and neither do native nations - cuz many are corrupt and keep the money for themselves.

uh... here's how it works.

if you LIVE on the tribal land where they build a casino, you are entitled to a "split" of the profits. Over the hill from santa barbara, there is the "chumash casino" .. the chumash indians who live on the land in the surrounding areas got around 28k/month last year.... imagine the executives lol

o and biteme...

if your great gmother was 1/2... then your gmother was 1/4, your MOTHER 1/8, and YOU 1/16... pretty much nullifies your point either way unless one of them married some redman'age.

also might add. Tribes with casinos have maybe 50-100 members. They also 'clean house' and remove members they don't like. Lotsa corruption.

Many are also barely indian. The Foxwoods casino/tribe in CT - they're african american as can be. Maybe .01% indian if that.

real native tribes - are the poorest demographic in the nation. 95% unemployment. Funny, and we feel sorry for Jose and Ghetto people.

yup...

I did some consulting for a certain indian casino in the san diego area... lol First time this has happened, I had to modify their erp software to support BILLION dollar checks, it was actually a lot of work to change the maxchars from 7to10... L O L. They were actually really cool. Into lots of stuff you wouldn't think they are.

I will suspect that you probably have VERY good grades (neither of my stepchildren is stellar students, frankly I don't know if my stepdaughter even has a 2.0 GPA). Since you brought it up, Heather, and I know you're Amer. Indian, I have to ask, were you awarded any scholarships/grants? As Razor pointed out, there are scholarships for ALL minorities and kids dealing with special issues.

I kind of think Biteme is talking about the myth that American Indians get benefits from the Federal Govt. just for the sake of your BEING an Indian (sort of like Guilt Money, you know?) The old myth about free health insurance, free monthly benefits, specially jobs only open to Native Amers., things like that.
