okay.
i keep my elbows tucked on the decent, and the bar hits my sternum/ upper abs .
I pause, then i get the bar a couple of inched up, and my elbows flare , and the bar starts to travel over my face ??

Is there any way to combat this, rather than just concntrate fully ??

more tricep/lat work. sounds like you are uncomfortable relying on your tri's with your shoulder blades pinched. your lats are probably giving/causing you to compensate and throw more shoulder into it.

bands looped from wrist to wrist, i hear. never tried it though, i just backed off a bit to work on form.

hmmm. sounds like youre on to something.
i benched like a bodybuilder for years, so i am afraid of my tris handling the weight.
i mean i WAS afraid.

I've also benched and military pressed with flared elbows. Always. Didn't know any better. It takes an effort to tuck them in and bench low. Sometimes I forget.. duh. When the weight gets heavy they flare. I think you just need to practice, practice, practice.
