MS Word -- basic question

Why is it that when I use spellcheck, it does not give me the option of adding words? This is really annoying, and I can't figure out how to fix the damn thing.

K for any help here.

OK, hope I'm understanding it properly...
anyhow, if the word you wanna type is underlined 'cause it's not spelled correctly (according to Word), instead of spellchecking the whole document:
1. Just go straight to that word in question.
2. Right-click on it.
3. Select the "Add to Dictionary" or some crap like that option.

Hope I've been of help?!
:)

When you right click the word that spellcheck thinks is misspelled, there is no "add" option?

Yes, there is, but it's not 'blacked in'. I can't push the add button.

If I type a word that give me the red squiggly lines, and then hit F4, it just retypes the word for me again.

:cow:
I was kidding. F4 is the help shortcut for all MS software

Try saving the document as it is and then retry...
if it still doesn't work, s'thing could be corrupted in your Word.

Try this fix...it's for checking and repairing Windows components & processes:

From the Start menu, select Run.
In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: there's a space b/w sfc and /scannow).
Select OK.
Follow the prompts (if any, usually runs on its own) throughout the System File Checker process.
Reboot when it's done.

See if this helps...

A common problem when people cannot select the add option is that their language and dictionary settings do not match their regional settings.Make sure Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional Settings are set to the same language (usually english usa) that your language and dictionary are set to.

True...
and if all else fails try my suggestion above.

It says "files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional CD-Rom now."

I don't have my disc with me here at school!

*note: I just skipped this*

Gah, it asks for it again!

Grr...

My god, i'm starting to run out of ideas. Gimme sec to do some research.

LOL, thanks, it's appreciated.

I've had this problem since this summer, when my father did the usual summer reformat or whatever of my computer.

Also, if anyone's really really good at IUPAC naming, I could totally use some help here too. This molecule's beyond my ability.

. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof
2. Copy the file Custom.dic to another folder or rename the file Custom.bak (you can disregard this and steps 7+ if you dont want to save words youve already added to the dictionary. Just delete the file instead)
3. Open Word and select Tools-Options-Spelling & Grammar then click the Dictionaries button
4. Select the Custom.dic from the dictionary list then click remove and OK to the warning message
5. Select New then enter Custom.dic as the name and select Save. You can also set your language option.
6. Select OK x 2 to get back to Word

Now do a check by typing an unusual word to see you can add it ok. If successful then do the following to retain words already added?.

7. Open the original custom.dic (the one you moved or changed to ext bak) and select the words and CTRl-C to copy. This is just a text file so use Notepad to open.
8. Navigate to C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof and open your new Custom.dic file and paste the words in.
9 Add another custom word to make sure the added words didn?t stuff up anything and you can still add words.
10. Delete the old custom.dic file
