Moving to another city

Well, we officially gave notice today. My fiance and I decided to basically leave the city I grew up in and move about five hours away (Ottawa for those peeps who know Canada). She can get a great job while my industry is transferable (PT) and we would rather not raise kids or buy a house in Toronto because the people really suck here and everything is overpriced.

I've never moved before except for school and I know absolutely nobody there except for her brother and a couple of old university friends. Anyone who has relocated share your tips and stories, whether it was forced or not.

I moved about 10-12 times in my lifetime(I'm 25 :worried:)... it sucks... I never fully unpack, I've been in my own home for 2 years nos and never unpacked because felt I'd move any moment... I was right though, I'm moving to another country soon.... making friends depends on your hobbies, likes and dislikes, good luck :)

yah T.O. sucks. lololol
bienvenue a l'outaouais!!

Can you compare/contrast Toronto to lager US cities, e.g. Chicago, NYC, LA, &c.? How's COL versus NYC?

:cow:

Toronto doesn't really compare to larger US cities except for the attitude and high price of real estate. Our sports teams suck.

Move to Calgary

i love moving its fun i think...you get a fresh start and you get a whole new area to explore and new restaurants and etc to try...meet new people and all that stuff

Ottawa's not the most exciting place in the world but a great place to have a family.
I really like it and it's less than 2 hours from Montreal.
Where in Ottawa?

Haven't figured that out yet but we're probably going to rent for 6-12 months and then buy. Currently looking at Vanier/Riverside area or if we can find a cheaper place Sandy Hill or the Glebe. We would love to have a yard for the dog but townhouses for rent are all far away from downtown.

toronto is such a dirty gangsta shithole with traffic jams everywhere. good lord.

not much. just pick a good place, check out the sites and make lotsa new friends in your area. join a roller/ice hockey league lol

Yeah the traffic here is stupid, that's why I ride my bike everywhere. It's faster. I'm sure it doesn't compare to NYC traffic though, that was incredible when I was there.

done it a bunch of times. your advantage is that you're going with someone and you have a job (easiest way to meet new ppl and learn the social scene). it ain't that hard, just make a concerted effort to learn the city. become a regular at places like the gym, coffee shop, a restaurant.

Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trust me on this one.
No to Bayshore, Brittania Heights, Vanier, Mechanicsville/Hintonburg, Lowertown, or South Keys.

Sounds like a plan. I have a friend who lives across the street from the Parliament bldgs next to Byward Mkt in a rent controlled building. It's nice but she doesn't drive and I'm sure it's not easy to get in.
My cousin lives in Kanata which is a great place for a family but it is ALL families.

Good luck!
