Motivation trouble after ACL

This sucks. I have had 4 surgeries in the last 18 months from football injuries. Up until now my motivation for rehab has been great but now, after my second knee surgury, I have ZERO motivation to get back in the gym and get back into shape. If any of you can relate to this, hook me up with a story or a picture or just a kick in the ass to get me back in the gym. I'm getting fat and my football career is over. :(

Man, that sucks. Sorry, I have no words of wisdom or personal experiences similar to this, but I can sure empathize with you.

This is one thing that these boards are good for, you can easily and quickly find others in similar situations and help each other out.

Good luck on the rest of your rehab.

You want a motivational story?

I have been in your shoes before and still am. I tore me ACL my freshmon year of football in high school. After 3 surgeris the doctor recommened and pleaded with me to not play sports. He says it just wasn't worth it. Now to some 6 figure doctor it may not have been worth it, but to a kid that is atletic, sports and pussy is all you really care about. Now this doctor is telling me not to because I physically can't.

At first, I got depressed and gained a lot of weight. I went from a lean 190 to a fat 220 in two months. I was pathetic. All my friends would go out and have fun and play sports while I did jack shit. Then one day I decided I was more than what some doctor thought I was.

I got off my ass and worked out intensly at the gym. I played football the next few years. My knee held up fine becaue I busted my ass. In the end I won a section title, a league title, all league 2 years, most valuable back in the league and recieved over 40 letters from school. Lastly, I was chosen to play in the Northern California Allstar game. I did what everyone said I couldn't do. I love it when someone says I can't do it. Then I have to go out of my way to prove them wrong.

With my ACL, I think it is one of the best things that could have happened to me mentally. Physically? NO, but mentally I am stronger than ever. I know that i can do whatever i decide I want to do and not what somoene else has decided for me.

You will get over it. If you work hard you will play football again.

Things happen and there is nothing you can do about them, but what you do with what happens to you makes you what you are.

Linebackers........Shit I am a quarterback, they eat me for breakfast, when they hit me from behind;)

It sounds like you might have a fucked up Q-angle in your legs. I majored in athletic training at college and helped one of the star linebackers wit his rehab. He tore his ACL three times over his 5 year career. His Q-angle ( the relationship of the greater trochanter, patella and tibial tuberosity was that of a female. Which means he was knock-need. One thing you have to remember is after having your own or someone else's patellar tendon inserted is that the tissue is dead. After surgery it is very tight causing stability. It takes several months for the blood supply to be transferred into the new ACL. Most people think there good as new and end up tearing thier ACL again before it heals. You may also have one leg shorter than the other that can cause this problem. Talk to your physician or trainer about this. Sometimes these can be corrected.

While playing college ball Blew out my knee and shoulder in one play...It sucked... had to train around both of them couldn't trained legs for awhile or chest shoulders...took time off...after a couple of month back in gym Trained upper body legs still no....But switching routine to 100's got me back in decent shape...Just keep on going it'll come back

Hey, I saw a buttload of those injuries in the land of the Big Red. It's amazing the miracles the doctors and rehab people can do these days. Never blew out a knee but had surgery for disc. Some advice:

1) Rehab rehab rehab. It sucks, but it works. Without it, you will never get 100% again.

2) With rehab, you WILL get 100% again. But, it's up to you. The only thing holding you back is your own fear (of tearing it again). That sounds stupid, but I saw more mFers after surgery afraid to lift and run again. That is what you are SUPPOSED to do!!!!

Good luck, bro!!

Thanks for your input guys. I appreciate it. I'm just about able to walk without crutches again so I'll get back to the gym soon. The hard part is sticking to a decent nutrition program.

I feel your pain....

I blew my ACL in 1988 while playing football at Tenn. Tech. I was a freak when it came to training, but when I got injured, I got depressed and discouraged(my rehab was 18 months). After i finished rehab I was no longer able to play ball, and I was inactive for 5-6 years. Well, in 1994-95, my best friend bought a health club and I started working out because it was free, well long story short, Im 33 now and in the best shape of my life. Im going to be in my first BB competition in Aug., and I cant wait to get in the gym every day to get better!! Keep ya head up dog, your young and got lots of time to recover and do whatever you want to with your life. E-mail me if ya need any encouragement or questions bout ACL injuriess/rehaab.:fro:

I dislocated my shoulder during every game of my junior year football season. By the 7th game I couldn't even lift it above my head. So I took a week off and went to physical therapy...one weeks turned to two...two to three. Then I came back for my last game of the season...I was sooooo jacked up to go out and play again with my pals, I was going nuts in the locker room!! Finally game time comes and the Fuckin coach never put me in! After the game I threatened to kill the coach and went off for about an hour. I was running up and down the field screamin and shit. Finally I jumped on the ground and started punching the ground and guess what.....Dislocated shoulder! Only this time there was no one there to put it back in for me!
Surgery time!
So I had the surgery and couldn't move for about 3 weeks. It got better and better, until I was lifting semi-heavily again. I changed gyms so no one I knew would be there, cuz I felt like a pussy lifting such light weight. I worked my ass off. And by the end of the summer I was benching my weight 22 times(180 pounds), a record for my school. Thats how we do our strength test before and after the summer to see who actually worked out during the off season. The next best person did their weight 6 times!! What pussies!
So I came back for the season and rushed for 650 yards, only four touchdowns though, and made 133 tackles at cornerback and had 6 INTs.
And I dislocated my shoulder in every game again, but this time I never told my coach, I just had my friends twist it back in during the huddle!
Now my shoulder is still fucked after the second surgery and there is no motivation like I had that year. So I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I'm just starting to get back into the gym and already seeing myself get alot stronger while my friends are at the beach all day getting fat and sunburned...That's all the motivation I need.
I go to the gym from 12-2 and still have time to hit the beach when I get home! Unless I have to work, which is only 3 days a week!

Thanks for listening to my rambling ass,
B-10
