Morgan Freeman: Black History Month is ridiculous.

I learned that in my all white elementary school in the 1960's. It is American history.

Agreed. It kills me when those that claim to have liberal attitudes begin a story with "This Mexican guy" or "That Black chick" . . . many of them post on this board.

I agree with Morgan Freeman. Interesting. I remember arguing against bluepeter, Division, and others about how television stations like BET and now the Asian Network, causes the same harm. Neither one of them agreed with me. I left the thread the minute Division started quoting rap lyrics.

I have always thought Black History Month was a good idea because the American History that is taught in school is generally lilly white. I loved what Morgan had to say in the part I quoted however. As to whether it causes harm? I'll say the same thing I said way back when we chatted about BET. I don't like it but until the mainstream changes, we're stuck with it.

I think these programs/ideas do more harm than good as long as minorities are sufficiently represented in the mainstream. There was a time when blacks never won Emmys, Oscars so a separate awards show was needed....no longer the case. At one point in time there was a call for a Miss Black America, BET, etc...not any more. On the other hand you could probably count the number of blacks on the shows Friends, Frazier and Seinfeld that had speaking roles all on one hand with fingers to spare.

True but you had the Cosby Show. I guess it's offer and demand but there's a fair market (Dave Chapelle Show for example...). Do you see many asians ? No. Do people make a big deal ? No.
