Montreal

i am interested in hearing all opinions and facts, good and bad, about the city and/or suburbs of Montreal
provide links if possible
as in colleges, cost of living, crime experiences, traffic, job availability, any chance of discrimination against a Texan or two :) and so on

neither me nor dread lord have left the country before
how easy is it to get visa's or how do we go about the first steps of the process .
jobs, college... things like that..

There's only good things I can say and God knows I've been in many cities around the world. Pretty cheap to live here. For example you can have a nice app. for about 300$/month. Electricity too is pretty cheap. You dont have to pay for water. As for colleges well remember that many americans come to McGill every year and they aren't disapointed. Yes we have crimes but nothing to compare with New-York or the majority of US city. Remeber firearms aren't legal unless its for hunting and under very strict conditions.

Anyway if you have specific questions then drop me a mail. I just dont know what to say here......lol

hehe thank u Manny
i heard that McGill was basically Ivy league
and then there is Concordia, right?

what do u think it would take to get into McGill?
McGill is a university just like Concordia, Harvard, Oxford.....

Concordia is a great business school and pretty cheap. Also depends what field you are going into.

Cost of living is low, crime rate is low, temperature in the winters are low.

Summers get up to around 90degrees but average is around 80 degrees but it does get muggy and humid.

There is always something to do in Montreal. For example tomorrow night i'm going to an invite only party for a 10th anniversary of an Italian restaurant and plenty of stars will be there...George Clooney is one and my dream girl is the other.....ANGELINA JOLIE...grrrrrrrr

What? Apprend donc le Français tabarnak!

how is the tech industry ? thats where dread lord needs a job
we are both business administration students, two years through so far

a friend of mine is going to concordia so that seems like a decent choice. i waas just curious about mcgill too

Tech industry is a bit slow at the moment. Tell him to check out the large companies on the West Island of Montreal if he's looking for english work.

Some biggies
Matrox
StS Systems
Nortel
CAE

I did my B.Comm. at Concordia, not only the university to be proud of but also the best 3 year party I have ever been to as well! Pis, mets-en hostie, ca vaut l'coup d'apprendre un ou deux mots de bon vieux franssa tabarnak! hehehe

ok i hope that is a good thing..
dread lord says "fuck french"

We won't hate him. There's plenty of english people in Montreal. But the province of Quebec is french; the other cities might only speak french. My quebecers don't like is the dread lord says "fuck french" attitude. We don't want to assimilate you but we want you to respect us and respect our roots. All we ask is that he try at least to learn the basics so he could possibly help himself if he meets somebody who doesn't speak english. Maybe he could begin by listening some Grim skunk music. Ha ha!

I know they've had tons of layoffs but I really believe it's more to avoid retraining and higher wages. These fuckers fire most of the company and rehire younger...cheaper workers. If you don't believe me drive by their 2 buidings on the West Island and you'll see most of the parking lot full of cars way into the wee hours of the night.

YES YES YES!!!!!

Concordia has the best commerce department in Canada
some of the best schools there are computer science, commerce,

in my field they have the best MA in Canada for Public Policy
but the student in my branch SUX!!!!!!!!
I hate them LOL

how cold does it get? Like on average the coldest for how long of a span? The place sounds cool im just a warm climate type of guy.

I remember in HS I told Earl ( exchange student from Jamaica )
<

Earl, often we get -50 plus wind so we get -70 is quite normal
so he asnwer " Fuck you jaafff boss man" " Not paasssible get ta cold"

Man we got the -70 in that winter of 95 :D

But now its so warm and we have no snow its depressing :bawling:

Again for Concordia I am attending Concordia.

I did some of my university work in the states, and we cannot compare.

Right now Concordia is ranked 11 ( MacLean ) in Canada but not on grades
and school work but on how much the school spent on books, toilets, grass etc...

Yes the school have some greedy bastards at the higher rank.

But still we have the University with the highest number of foreign students in the country ( sheez I can now speak, Hindu, Paki, Cantonesse, Palestinian ( inside joke ),
jap, spanish etc.. LMAO )

The only thing I hate about the campus are

- my former football teamates
- lack of real campusses.

Actually I'm feeling really good on all this test. No violent tendencies whatsoever. Only problem is I'd have to make a hole in my bed around my waist area to be able to sleep on my stomach. Shit if I even think I'm going to think about a woman it comes shooting straight up. Gotta love it :p

Did you inject testosterone directly in your dick? Maybe you could try sleeping on your back or on your women; that would make the whole you asked about.

depend where you went

I remember once a lil town in Georgia had a very bad attitude after I said in the town restaurant to the waitress " bring me to your KKK leader".

I wonder why

I'm currently dieting right now, and I had a dream not to long ago, where I took a train to montreal to go to a LaFleur. It ended with them not understanding my order because I had forgotten french. What a nightmare...

You guys in Montreal... Fuck you. You have it so easy with the women. Have you seen the women in Ontario? When I came here, I couldn't beleive it. And over here, you need to "commit" just to get a little pussy.

Oh, I was told to "mange d'la snout" one time by this pepper girl. Very classy. And my favorite: "Vas'te faire Voire!"

MuSuLPhReAk said:

What did you do to them??? :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I'm gonna try to keep it short: It was in High School in Sec 5, and I went out with this nutcase. The date was suppose to be a trainning session at the gym, dinner then a school dance.

We went to her house to pick up her stuff after school, and she took me to her room, and well, I fucked her brains out. I got what I was looking for so I basically wanted to go home, and instead of taking her to a nice place, we went to Lafleur.

That's when I realised she was crazy. She was telling me about how her grandmother's spirit had entered her body, and how she had caught her dad masterbating to a porno, how astrology affects us all, and how she thinks we may be soul mates...

At this point, I just left. The next Monday at school she tried to kiss me at the Cafeteria and I told her that I'm not ready for a relationship...That's when she flipped and crying and yelling in front of about 500 people:" mange d'la snout" among other things echoed in my ears.

Okay, I just told you my life story.

Btw, the reason I remember this so well is because she continuously harassed me for 2 years. She even called my house saying she was pregnant with my child and that I had attempted to rape her.

Hey bigandy; you're not very lucky. So, the girl in Toronto are difficult. Too damn bad because I am going on a trip in Toronto on March 17. I will rent a chamber and stay there for the night; I wanted to go to a bar and bring some women with me. Looks like it's gonna be tough.

Damn now that is one sick girl. Now I can understand why u have a bitter taste in your mouth but they aren't all like that. The french girl I dated only scribbled a whole bunch of shit on my home windows with a marker. JK :)

And don't plan on picking up any hookers!! The cops there have a blast busting potential customers. They put the shit on TV and all.

Oh, yeah I know. I love french women. I love it when they swear.

I've lived in Montreal all my life except for the last 1-2 years. It just seems like sex is such a big deal here. Losing your virginity is a sacred act or something...

I think they watch too much Dawson's Creek...

Oh, and the television here is 10 times better. Although, I miss RDS and Ivon Micheal and that other guy... :(

I don't catch RDS anymore since I switched to a dish but I do miss those mini putt matches at 4AM after still drunk from partying too much and screaming "BIRDY" with the french announcer. That was hilarious!!

BWHAAAAAAAAAA...OH MAN! That was funny, these guys are so intense, and they're competing for 100 dollars! There's about 10 people in the crowd.

I liked the boxing with the old fat Jean Paul saying: "Mon cher Yvon Michel, merci d'etres d'la notre cette soiree. Oh, mon doux, Eric Lucas a menton d'granite! Sacree Coeur, Eric est entrain d'ouvrir la machine!!!"

I hope it does offer RDS. You could even catch montreal's canadian Gino odjick speak french; hilarious!!! This guy is really tough, cool guy but looks kind of gay at thes same time. Or Jean Reno's comments about the Alouettes; this is too good to miss!

Nothing beats a good interview with Stephane Richer...come on guys for those who remember is good old years with the Habs he was one hilarious mofo on the mic.........:D

uhh
thanks for keepng the thread alive :>
although i dont understand any of it :(

how hard is it to find a nice place to live there
i'll throw out a "random" date, let's say we had to move within two months, and sometime before then were able to visit for, oh let's say, a week.

how much difficulty would we have actually finding a place to rent assuming we already used internet resources as much as possible to find apartments and such that might interest us

assume also we would have to work for about a year before we could attend any school, hopefully Concordia

i just dont exacty want to get my ass beat when / if i go up there

i will make dread lord learn some basic french at least, as i obviously need to relearn it myself :/
so we shan't antagonize any french canadians...

Well for your info, Most people move on the 4th of July. SO try to get your app. before otherwise itcould be difficult, even if the best deals are always in august. Also it depends where in Montreal you're going........

since its winter u think we could find something in the city?
are hte streets kept reasonably clear of snow and ice? if not, u will hear about 2 texans wrecking their cars every single day
i have not even seen snow, much less driven in it
dread lord has a bit of experience, but nothing to compare ..

Yes the snow on the streets is taken care of quite nicely.

no problem. We are equiped for this. Plus its not like it used to be 10 - 15 years ago when we had over 50 cm of snow in a week and it was snowing from november till march non-stop......

If you are looking for an appartment then get a move on it. We are having a shortage of places lately so u probably will need a few weeks to come up with a decent place. Like manny said...July 4th is national moving day in Canada but u need to secure the lease way before that.
When u think u found a place let us know and we'll tell u if it's a good location or not.
Good luck :)

thx musulp.

by the way, if u guys have any good links about montreal itself or any suggested places to live, plz pass them on
of course i have been lookihng alerady, but inside information is always a good thing :)

i dont even have winter clothes, lol

why did it snow so much then but not now? forgive the ignorance, im kinda distracted

Me thinks the weather is wacky in Montreal this year :)
I'm not complaining...winter's like this are so easy to get through!!

I know an appartment open in near Westmount, cote des neiges

See I met that McGill girl from NH and she now going home ( :( YEAAAAAAH )
her appartment is open of what I heard, nice place tho.
Near the FMR barracks.

Two Texans in Con U, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This will be funny, watch out for those Al Gaeda members there,
actually there 4 of them there.

As for snow, after a good winter you will get used to it, np for that.
only thing that might drive you crazy is the parking around Concordia tho.

dunno why but its happening all around the world. Now its snowing in Greece but raining in Montreal. I guess the Earth is getting crazy......lol

First off move to the suburbs, preferably in the West Island where 80% are english speaking and i also believe July 1st is national moving day as well as Canada Day.

To name you some cities, Dorval, Pointe-Claire, Dollard des Ormeaux. About 15 minute drive to downtown area and University. Highway driving along the 20 is not bad in early morning or throughout the day if your heading downtown for school. Not only that but if you move downtown you end up paying $600-800 for a 2 1/2 appartment where in the West Island you can get it for like $350 everything inlcuded. If you have a car this is the way to go.

Also try NDG ( Notre Dame de Grace ) a weird neighborhood, half rich half ghetto.
There a Concordia Campus there name Loyola ( from Loyola college )
where there the Vanier Library, a lil campus in fact, """""""""""""""football stadium"""""""" is there too.
There a shuttle bus from Loyola to Sir George William ( downtown Campus )
every 10 min or so.

but I tell ya, the Sherbrooke street in that part of "da hood" is nuts.

it drive me crazy

thx very much for these bits of info, the more the better
im making it All into something simpler for dread lord to read later

we will definitely have to work for at least a year before we can go to school ..

so suburbs is the way to go.. ok
we will have to dish out alot of money to move up there, we cant move ourselves because we have too much stuff
we dont want anything that is already furnished
we paid $1500 for a 2 bedroom 2 bath apt. in austin that was NICE
and we are paying $700-800 for a shitty 3 bedroom 2 bath in fort worth
so price is not an issue for us too much
we just want something nice...
we are tired of this low class bullshit

these ghettos u speak of, tell me more
:>
i live in downtown (basically) of a fairly large city, mexican drug dealers across the street and ghetto galore on the blocks beyond that

try to scare me with your ghettos
black people? what do u consider the ghetto

dread_lady said:

except if you go live in Montreal-Nord or St-Michel there's no ghetto. We take care of all those wannabe niggas. BTW Forget the West-Island. Too far. Go for NDG or even Rosemont-Villeray. Pretty nice. And if you're lucky enough maybe you'll find a good deal in Le Plateau Mont-Royal. Thats where I live and thats the hottest place in town. !!!

manny, i never said anything, but your sig cracks me up

im for montreal, but i think when we visit all the french names everywhere and street names and EVERYTHING will be a bit too much for dread lord
i hope not.... but he is ... not very cultured i guess i should say

HELL YEAH Wannabee " gang " nigga"

Hey patnais! I watched New Jack City man! patnais me will be gangsta!

please oh please give me the perm to kill them.

yes you can find nice appartment around NDG, as for the ghetto is just a part of NDG is quite
ugly compared to 5 min north of it were house averaged 5 millions .

You can also move closer to the downtown campus ( SGW ), there some few appartment
quite expensive but for a american whom dollars is 62% higher than us its mean you pay
450$ for a 1000$ appart

or you can move to my street they build some new kind of "town house".

450!! bwah!
thats what im saying! we are going to be rich bastards up there
fuck ya

and a town house, describe that
here its just like sort of a two-story type living arrangement
a house-like thing for lease

same thing?

well they are kinda like "semi" but there are appartment. they seem nice tho, only
ugly thing is the side of the house. LOL

Gangsta, oh oh oh and oh they are lil fuck that things because they are black or whatever they are they dont have a future and they should do like in the movies.
some are crazy and really merit a bullet in the head

dread_lady said:

Manny, my gf lives off of villeray near iberville, it's a pretty good neighborhood.

Hello. I am living in lachine now, right by the canal.

As for visas, they are not hard to get. the problem is if you get a student visa, then you can not work while here (except on campus) and for the work visa, from what I understand you can't go to school.

You have to get quebec authorization before the federal canadian government will give you a visa. You cannot get quebec authorization until you are admited to a university.

Getting into Canada is a big joke

no wonder we have more than 200 Al Queda members here, and 40% are here in mtl LOL

Only 5 actual ghettos exist in Quebec...one of them is in Lachine.

damnit
tell me more about the visa stuff...
ideally, we expected to work until at least june of 2003, so at best that would put our college off until that Fall at least

what are the other terms of a visa? i honestly havent had a chance to look it up online yet and it's easier to just ask outright ...
