what is the deal?
do you have pet monkeys?
you were online in the late 80's?PuddleMonkey said:lol seriously? Back in the late 80's my brother and I joined a fantasy baseball league. I think I was about 12 or 13 years old at the time. Anyway, I came up with PuddleMonkeys as my team name because I was mad all the cool names I wanted were already taken. It was a "serious" league and I made a mockery out of it being the only team with an odd name. I've used it for various things ever since.

never knew about fantasy leagues before the interwebz
so what started off as a sports name has invovled into your epersona, complete with matching monkey avatars.
my mom had a pet monkey once, she got ride of it cause it would throw it's shit at her
so you spent the 80's more or less without tangPuddleMonkey said:Sports card shops were popular for get togethers and starting leagues.
i got a few rookie cardsPuddleMonkey said:But on the bright side I still have a Nolan Ryan rookie card and a bunch of other shit lol.

deion sanders
proly worth a few hundered total eh?
i'm under the impression that cards lost a lotta value...basically nothing printed in the last 20yrs is worth a whole lotPuddleMonkey said:I use to have shitloads of 89 Score Sanders. Not sure if I have any left. My brother and I started a card shop in the 90's, I'd guess 10-12 '86-'87 Fleer Jordans passed through my hands. Not to mention the Star card.

skybox was the shitPuddleMonkey said:I started losing interest when every damn pack of cards had some sort of special insert. It use to be exciting to get them!
Upper Deck I think started it all. When they came out in 89 everyone was exciting about the holograms on back.

PuddleMonkey said:Got so sick of moving boxes upon boxes of cards every time I'd change residency I finally just donated around 40,000 cards to the childrens hospital. Commons of course, but you never know, players like Sammy Sosa played for years before making a name for themselves. I think thats the only charitable thing I've ever done in my life.
samoth said:Yeah, the concept of inserts was interesting at first, but it totally went too far. It probably played a part in alienating myself as well.
You had a card shop? SWeet! I used to love going to those. And comic shops, although I never really read comics. I was always fascinated with the price markets and buying and selling and stuff.
The grading crap is gonna ruin the markets for a lot of people, especially kids and low-budget collectibles. It started with the PCGS in the coin industry back in the '80's and has somehow taken off in recent years to become huge business in coins, cards, comics, and other crap. Who wants to have stacks of encapsulated stuff? It makes sense for the high-end numismatic community and protecting old coins worth $20K, but a $100 coin or card? C'mon. Even EBay has adopted official selling standars where they only accept coins and stuff graded by certain grading companies. Rediculous. The people behind grading companies are friggin' rolling in money, too.
