For a big promotion and move to White Plains, NY.
We're talking a big opportunity for me
which I'll probably end up declining :worried:

I'll likely be giving up just shy of 6 figures to move back to Chicago making much less

when you weigh out the cost of living i'm sure it's pretty close.

you NEED to make six figures in ny/nj/ct to be somewhat comfortable
the accounting firm im hired on at has two offices in mannhatan and its tempting to try to xfer there after a couple years but i would have to be making around 100k like you said. my starting salary is 50k and doesnt look like that will double in only 2-3 years so i would have to wait until 5 years if all goes well.

Chicago isn't exactly dirt cheap. Having lived in Chicago and currently living in metro NYC, I ask if you have thought this one through thoroughly.

75-80K in NYC and you don't live even in NY (you have to go to Jersey, unless you have 3-4 housemates).

The sticker shock for you coming from Texas to the Northeast will be beyond your wildest dreams.

Im from the Chicago area. I would not be living within the city limits but rather the suburbs. Im very familiar with that area and the cost of living and its not even comparable to what it would cost to live in Westchester county

Your family lives in Chicago right? It's a great city and as you said cheaper so I think you would be making a good decision to move there instead.

don't feel guilty or bad about giving up the money. You'd probably not be any better off, but you'd be unhappy. and traffic there is horrible.

you made the right choice. :)

I thought you guys were feds? Isn't DC the place to be if you're a bueracrat?

One of the best bits of advice I ever received was "The best job doesn't always pay the best". Take a look at which job will be the most rewarding work wise and for career development and make your decision based on that.

If that means moving to NY for a few years, I would say do it.

lol I dont know why you keep thinking that.
well, lumberg was with the Fed but he hasnt been working for them since August last year and I never was a Fed employee. i work in the Managed Care industry.

you are gonna move back to Chicago! wow! Is lummy getting a new job?

Smurfy said:
Lummy owns his own IT Consulting business.
sweet! so he can basically work from anywhere? does he do a lot of travelling? does he have a lot of people working for him?

he doesnt have anyone working for him. he travels to clients locations sometimes but a lot of what he does/wants to do is remote networking, etc with small businesses. and we have oogobs of connections in the chicago area so i think it could be very lucrative for him out there.

sounds good!

I work in IT myself and hire a lot of consultants, some long term, some short term, i don't deal too much with networking though, we have an infrastructure team for that.

more than that Dave, prolly 150K up there, or more imo. I'll read on down, someone has prolly added a post who actually lives there...

what is the apt Dave, 7-800sqft, 1br, it is in a really nice section of town, like he said 10 miles or so from downtown. He'll have grocery, clubs and the Galleria Mall, all within a 5 minute radius. Who lives in Chicago, NY, Boston or area like that, give us some feedback on the housing costs comparison...

Apt is 650 sqft, covered parking, fitness center, probably 200 yards off Westheimer so its got access to everything easily. Shopping, Galleria, restaurants, its fucking yuppie heaven and shit.

My master plan is work one more higher paying job out here then move back to ATL ask and ask for the same pay.

If we didn't already have a reason not to do it, this would seal the deal.

j/k I bought some primer grey caliper paint on an even deeper discount when I picked up my sway bar end links, wouldn't be a problem.

Don't tell Smurfy though.

I bet that sumbitch would go for 2500-3K/mo easy in any northern city, IF you could get it. Nobody seems to want to post up on it....
