Serious question:


Last week a new member joined the gym. She didn't click the nationality section on the application, so I checked the African-American box. She got pissed and said she took offense to the term. She said it was derogatory to blacks.

Help me out here please.

she considers herself american, not african american. her ethnicity should be taken to be african, her nationality american, not african-american.....

she considers herself american and the form didnt give her that choice. and as she probably felt her ethnicity didnt have an effect on how good a gym member she was, even if there were other reasons for the question (ID, insurance etc)

Of course, "American" was not a choice. It was White or African-American(of the choices that were applicable). She decided to check the African American box after some thought. SO I'm like, What the Crap. I didn't make the form.

I personally think the the SSN and nationality sections should be removed. I don't see how they are relevant. I simply wanted to know why that would have offended someone, so that I will not make that mistake in the future.

For example - A very good friend of mine, who happens to be black, always greets me with "My Negro." when he hits the gym...

If I said that, I would be fired.
 
Why does your gym require it's members to identify thier race? Ususally when you see questions like that they're under the heading "voulentary information." :confused:

I was told that it was part of a demographic sudy the hospital is doing thru all it's wellness centers.
 
I'll take a stab at this one. I prefer the term "black" over "african american" as well because, 1) Africa is a continent not a country. Caucasian people dont check a box called "European Americans" on any application or form I've ever seen. The majority of black people in the US are a mixture of black, white and native american (well atleast I am). So I feel offended at times when only 1 part of my heritage is singled out.
I'm sure you didn't mean any harm, but she didn't check a box for a reason. I never do when it's optional.

Oh, and when i fill out forms for my son I always check the white and african american boxes. I would never want him to feel he has to choose between one or the other.

Sorry - but it wasn't optional. Everyone has to fill out ALL the info on the application.

So - what would you have checked - knowing thatyou HAD to choose only one box.

Is there an other box she could have checked?
It doesn't bother me so much that I would have made a big issue of it. I don't like the term, but I'll check it without a second thought becuase I know that's what black people are considered in this country. Its cool. Some people are very touchy, in fact too touchy. On the other hand you have people that could care less. My mom still uses the word "colored" and it just makes me laugh. ;)

I have a question. If a white person moved here from South Africa and became a citizen, would they check the African American Box or the White box?

I doubt you will get in trouble for it, but next time ask because she could have been Dominican or Panamanian (sp?) and that would have made her Hispanic so you gotta be carefull with things of that sort.

The sooner we do away with race information on applications, the better. It should be against the law to require that information.

If I was Black.. I would choose to be called brown. If I was Black, I am sure I would be a medium color... like the color of swiss chocolate. So.. since I am from GA... if someone called me African.. I might raise hell too.

That is also beyond me why blacks are termed 'African Americans' and Caucasians are not termed 'European Americans'. That would be more fair wouldn't it?

I think they should just update all those stupid race check boxes to just read:

NATURAL SKIN COLOR (check one):

porcelain
beige
sand
pumpkin
caffe latte
caramel
dark chocolate

After all, those stupid race check boxes are not even going to make sense when people of mixed races make up a large percentage of the human population!

The more I think about it...why is it that only Africans get to have 'Americans' in their check box? Why do they not have 'Asian Americans', 'South Americans', 'European Americans', since most people who live in America are Americans?

That is EASY.. cause all of the other races hold on to their culture too hard.. I mean you see Indians with red dots on their heads living in Shreveport LA... you see Chinese people walking around in slippers..... but the African Americans... you don't see them wearing war paint and running around with dart guns and spears... right??

Actually, although you don't see African Americans with dart guns and spears (prolly because there are no sabre-toothed tigers running around the city streets.....), they DO walk around with those hats and multi-colored tunics. :)
 
Chinese people really do stick to their culture.. they take their shoes off before going inside!!!! They still speak Chinese to eachother at the dry cleaners.. African Americans do speak alot of Ebonics or Jive though.. but ....

I dunno... whatever's cool with me.

African American is just a ridulous term.

It makes an assumption that all Africans are black and all blacks are African. And frankly if I were black or African I would be offended to be forced to live under that label.

BronzedGoddess has already pointed out all of this in detail, so I guess I'm just agreeing with her statements.

Many people from Africa are white (Dutch actually) some are French (North West Africa) and flip side if I were black and from Jamaica why would I want to be referred to as a African?

Anyway, who knows when it will actually get changed, but I do not see the logic in using the term African American as a 'racial' category for goverment data since as Velvett said there are many white African Americans as well. Should those white African Americans check off that box after they move to the Americas, I mean who will explain to them that they should not check off the African American box?

If I don't see caucasion American, I'm not checking anything.

On all my law school applications the race section was "optional" So, since I'm white, I wisely left them all blank.
