What is a good *basic* poundage in Millitary Press when standing?

Like for bench, squat and deads 300-315 is considered the bottom rung of the respectable. What's your view on the lowest respectable weight for this lift?

IMO... if you're talking about impressing some chicks or the curling jockeys... strict sets of 135 will do.

OHP (Over head press) of 2 plates (225) IMO reped out with quality form is impressive to see... 315 and you're beyond seasoned.

I dont' think i've seen military sets of 315 ....ever, in my gym.

seated military...reps done to parallel (not full ROM) I've spotted an old friend doing them with 245... I was impressed with him, cuz he just got back to lifting from taking a few years off and having a kid, ect, ect... little bull he is.

I can get a set of 8 with 165 with standing military press. I like to think thats respectable, but 225 would be damn respectable.

A good basic poundage is whatever you can muster giving it 110% using decent form after getting past the initial learning stages of the exercise. That number will vary greatly.

I know that's not what you meant though. You're talking absolute rather than relative numbers. Anybody doing the big wheels is ahead of 99% of most gymgoers. A bodyweight strict press is impressive, IMO.

^^^ well put. lol, i like the "big wheels" phrase.

so true... it's reletive to bodyweight... shit, i'd be impressed with some A & F type doin' 95lbs as long as he's not curling, lol

I weigh 82kg and press for 8 reps (3 sets) with 60kg going below parallel (bar stays @ chin's height). I do it seated and I don't see many more dudes my size doing that in my gym (although I am sure its not much weight :( ) :(

The most I've ever seen anyone do is 225, and these were BIG guys doing it. I used to do my last set of 6 w/ 205, but this was only bringing it down a little lower than the top of my head. There are very few people out there that can put up 315 on military.

Standing I've done 255 for 5 in front bringin the weight back to my chest.

Seated 275BNP for two hitting the base of my skull with the weight.

hey, this isn't a toot your own horn thread, lol.

You're just making us feel puny :( ... nice lifts bor

So, all things being reletive... impressive Strict Military to you would be 325+ ?

Sorry about that.LOL

Don't worry about what you are doing you're doing great man, I have always had very strong shoulders.

There are many definitions to impressive. To me seeing someone actually do them right is impressive. Seeing the kids I train do near bodyweight presses, seeing Van Hatfield rip of 25 strict viking pressed with 250lbs was awesome. Also I have never seen anyone do more than 275 in a strict press, but 325 would be amazing.

Basically I am impressed with anyone doing over %60 of their BW without cheating. And if you're over 225 with strict form I am really impressed.

big overheads are always impressive, as the twinks in the gym usually avoid doing anything but laterals.

bodyweight for a single is a great goal imo, I don't do standing but for my seated presses I'm gunning for 315 by the end of the year (currently 275 for 2)

Seems the consensus is that few gym rats do them, even fewer do then correctly, and even fewer are good at it.

Personally I think 225+ is pretty neat. I am not there yet - 185x2 BTN is my best. I think I will see 225 this year if things go as planned.

Sorry to say that but throwing a number like that is kinda stupid

A 100 lbs female won't overhead press as much as a 160 lbs guy who won't overhead press as much as a 240 lbs guy

Besides a lot of people cheat or do push press

This being said a bodyweight overhead press is pretty good in my book

I can do 225 x 5 sets on push press but I usually only use 185lbs for seated military.

Oddly though, I can do 100lb dumbells for 10 reps. Probably because I don't train shoulders with barbell and only use dumbells.
