military press and triceps

BOOEY

Banned
How much of a factor do triceps play when doing Military Presses? My triceps were pretty sore today when I did shoulders and I noticed I wasn't able to get in as many reps as I usually am able to.

tris play a significantly large role when doing military press, this explains your problem

perhaps do tris and shoulders as far from each other as possible if the problem persists

It would also depend somewhat on your grip. If you go with more of a close grip, your putting more stress on your triceps.

This is true. I use to do my shoulder/leg day after my tri/chest day. Someone pointed out this problem to me (in addition to tris, some chest work hits you anterior delt head). So I slipped my back/bi day between them and the difference with the db shoulder press, etc was noticable.

The problem is you risk cutting your muscle recovery short. The more slower recovering muscles take at least 48 hours after a normally strenuous workout (as oppose to a week or two after the 'arm cure').

A lot of it depends on where you fail on the presses. If you fail on the bottom, it is probably a deltoid or lat weakness.

Failing during the upper portion of the lift would be a triceps problem.

If you do shoulders on a separate day from tris, and chest on another day, you're really working your tris 3 times a week. I changed my split to hit shoulders and tris on the same day and just planned for the overlap on shoulder pressing movements.
