Migraine sufferers......

NO drugs?

Get some coffee black - something heavy on the caffeine - suck it down black.
While it's brewing, get in the shower and just let the hot water hit the back of your head and neck, try and stretch your neck and relax. If you can stand it blast your head and neck with as cold as you can stand it water (I have a hand held so I can just hit my head and ot freeze my toocus off).

Grab your coffee and two ice packs, ice in a ziplock in a pillow case will work too or bags of peas or corn or something. Drink some coffee, get into bed put one pack on your top of hairline/forehead, the other behind your neck and try and get comfortable. Close your eyes and try and relax - hope for sleep.

If you're sick to your stomach try some plain white rice.

If you still have pain/symptoms after 12-24 hours and no drugs - go to the ER and they will hook you up to an IV w/ meds and you'll be good in 20 or minutes.

Get some abortive drugs if you see that this happens more than once a month.

Not a remedy but I was researching this for a friend. There is a lot of research linking migraines to seratonin levels and gastro problems. They've had success with many treating the stomach issues as opposed to just the migraine symptoms. I forget the name but there are some natural seratonin precursors or elevators on the market. The same is supposed to be true for those with anxiety and depression issues.

this is the 4th one this month. it's gotta be this anxiety medication....

The key is being proactive. Dont wait till it get's bad, or you're screwed.

Only thing I'd add to Vel's list is go easy with the caffiene at first to see how it effects you. It does lower intracranial bp, which can help, but it also excites your CNS and that doesnt help you to relax at all. When I have a bad one and drink coffee, I actually get dizzy.

i get nauseous and pukey. my stomach feels full and i feel like i have to burp constantly........i'm `bout to visit the ER with a fuckin' handgun in my waistband....pistolwhip me a nurse or something....

THAT IS DEAD ON TRUE!

Sertonin levels drop during a migraine episode.
Migraines are related to food allergies which of course lead back to the stomach and intestines.

She has sever anxiety and panic attack issues. The migraines are a related problem. We were preparing a diet for her to try and treat some of it naturally if possible since she's hesitant to become a lifetime prescription drug user. She will if she has to in the end. But she prefers trying other things first. I know the obvious like caffeine is supposed to be a problem. Also certain types of fat and even alcohol, which apparently can cause a rebound effect and is a natural depressant. There are some research doctors helping people with these issues exclusively with diet and supplements successfully.

Caffiene is tricky - good in a bind - but you are using it as a drug.
On the one hand you're told not to ingest caffiene and on the flip side many migraine meds are cut with caffiene.

I can tell you from person experience - if you want to start anywhere you start with food elimination - she will notice a world of difference after about three weeks.

i might have fucked myself up early in life. as a teen, i used to spar with pro fighters. i did this for a few years and i got kinda punchy after that. i got that tmj bullshit during this and then the headaches were a normal part of my life. then after i got shot, i had a lot of arterial damage and started getting wicked nose bleeds all the time. doesn't make much sense to me, but i seem to have to always be on some sort of aspirin and pseudo-ephedrine.....

I've had numerous patients with migraines thank me after they get complete relief by a Reglan injection.

Things to look out for: sudden onset (maximal intensity within 60 seconds), numbness or weakness in your arms or legs, trouble with your balance, neck stiffness, change in intensity or character of the headache, or "worst headache of your life." These can all be signs of a sentinel bleed from an aneurysm and should be worked up in the ED with a head CT and a lumbar puncture (if the head CT is negative). About 1:100 migraine suffers I see I actually find an aneurysm.

Jarhead is right in that many migraine sufferers get relief from neck manipulation. Just make sure your chiropracter is trained well. Neck manipulation carries a known risk of carotid artery dissection, something which is as serious as it sounds.

i always got rielief from accupuncture............... i used to have em all the time. i would have tried anything
