middle management sucks

not in a "woah is me" kind of way, and my job has some cool perks (not cool perkeles. those don't exist), but

everyone comes to me with their petty bullshit. They know it's too stupid to go to higher than me with complaints of "xxx is listening to me when i'm on the phone", "can you tell xxx not to leave his chair in the aisle?", "You know that xxx takes smoking breaks, right?"

Then MY boss gives me the stuff she doesn't want to do, and the ceo is giving me stuff to do because he doesn't want to burden my boss with it, but it's not appropriate for the other employees in my department to do.

whenever i check my email from home, there is some mini crisis that's given to me but when it comes time to get praise- the workers in my department get it and I have to ride the coattails of my manager to get recognition from the heads of my company, even though i did a lot of the work.
 
who is this "xxx" character you have? what ethnicity are they?

i'm the assistant manager of the marketing department.
the manager is also the manager of tech support, outside sales, and the web team. The marketing department is made up of 4 graphic artists, 4 technical writers, and 3 assistants (only 1 is full time).

we make a lot of things- our catalog is as thick as a phone book, but it's physics equipment. lab equipment, supplies, microscopes, telescopes, clean room, lasers, and nano technology and everything that goes with all of that.

hm, sounds a bit like waht I may end up doing inthe future. ill keep yur post in mind. hang in there buddy, stick it to the man

i hope these guys are paying you well. i was middle management first 2 years then senior management 4 years, long enough to learn-perfect the industry and save enough cash to start my company. i am not into making other ppl rich. i am into making ME rich. dont get me wrong, over the years i've had plenty of employees earn a strong living and i have encouraged some to go into business for themselves. i love sharin the wealth!!! stilleto, going into business for yourself should always be a consideration. it is good to be king.
 
Quit and become a firefighter, best job ever!!! And when we have problems we just tell each other to shut the fuck up, then laugh about it later that night

just don't blindly run into a skyscraper that's had a plane crash into it.

no way. i'm totally not into owning my own business any more than i already do (i do freelance art).
i guess its just all the pettiness that bothered me yesterday, and the lack of recognition.
 
I manage a small call center which employs about 15 CSR types and 2 CSR Supervisors. My motto is that we're too busy to deal with petty crap so dont bring it my way. People always want to complain about how busy they are or over worked, but then they want to spend time on petty crap. I either ignore it or tekll them I dont like petty crap.

i guess i could. I always just nod my head and listen and figure i'm the buffer between them and higher up. or more like- the filter, since 99% of what they complain about gets deleted and i'll go to my boss with that other 1%.

I actually met an ex firefighter while on vacation at the beach who was inside the building during all that shit. Said it was too much for him to handle and he left the job, now he works for the Marriot hotel or something. Speaking with him was more rewarding than any celebrity or meeting any president could be to me.
