middle back

eat big

New member
i just read on bodybuilding.com that barbell rows do your middle back, not your lats. i thought your lats were in your middleback. i do barbell rows bent over. help me out here

thanks, eat big

It really depends on how you perform the rows and how wide you grip the bar. Lats are on the sides of your back under your armpit. Bigger lats really help give you a wider, V-shaped upper body.

Dude, you really need to learn about your muscles.

Lats = on the outer middle back. Middle center back = Trapezious and rhomboids

thanks dude (aeoleon), i know where they are. ill stop there cause i dont wanna get bad karma. its just that i thought you trained your lats when you did rows too. when i do my barbell rows, overhand, shoulderwidth, elbows are out.
any input apprecitated

middle upper back. traps primarily, teres major some lats.

the more you get to pulling from overhead and less retraction of your scapula (shoulder blades) the more lats you are recruiting.

An easy way to think of what area your hitting with rows is to look at where your elbows are in the contracted position. If they are at low & back by your waist = more lats, the higher up you go & flare your elbows out the more scapular retractors used.

So if you want to hit lats with your rows use an underhand grip that keeps your elbows next to your body and row to your lower abdominal area. Make sure you can handle the weight with full control & ROM or your will cheat it up (the usual spastic half row half deadlift combo with your torso jerking upward - what dorks & meatheads consider goodform) Cheating it up decreases lat involvement, destroys your ROM and overworks your scapularhumeral muscles.
