microsoft windows 2000 server, for home computer

On that computer I just got it only has Windows 98, so I looked for software at work to put on it and we have a "windows 2000 server" disk.

It seems to be windows network software, but if I use it for only a home computer with just a single cable modem, would it still function normally like windows 2000?

I dont think we have a regular windows 2000 disk, only the 2000 server disk.

any input would be great, thanks

Yeah it would. But I don't know why you would want to. Windows 2000 server is very resource intensive. XP is more efficient in terms of utilizing your processor and memory compared to Windows 2000 and probably a better choice for what you need.

i have just plain windows 2000 on my 500mhz pc up at work and at least once a day it makes me want to go to the roof of my building, tie a plastic bag around my head, wait 2 minutes, then jump off the building and shoot myself in the head right before i hit the ground.

yeah, server is the same as pro, just has more options and may run a little slower. probably needs a little more ram but that's it.( as long as you meet the requirments)

The server version will work fine. There are a few things you'll want to tune so it's more responsive to running applications locally. You'll want to tune the performance for Applications instead of background processes.

There's one MAJOR difference: You won't be able to find a virus scanner that will work with the Server version... and when you're talking Microsoft, you might as well try to run a car with no oil in the engine.

It's also pretty unlikely that a Windows 98 machine will have the moxie to run Win2000 ("2k" for short) or XP. Not very well, anyway. XP is five years newer and a lot happened in those five years. Bite the bullet and start thinking about a new box. Six hundred bucks will buy a LOT of horsepower.

Digger is right. I bought a new Dell for the office yesterday

P4 2.66ghz,512MB RAM,80GB disk,16X DVD, integrated video & sound for $479 plus tax.

Me too. I just got a new Dell Dimension Desktop, XP PRO, 512MB, 80GB Hard drive, 48x Cd-RW/DVD combo, with all the trimmings...$781.
Should be delivered this afternoon.

ok so I could install the server edition and it would be the same as having windows 2000 but with extra features.....and the downside would only be that I wouldn't be able to have a virus detector? or could I only use a certain type of detector? and would a firewall still work?

The downside would be:
- It would run alot slower because the Server performance isn't tuned for having someone sitting at the computer.
- You can buy AV software but it will cost you as much as a new computer would
- firewall software for a server will cost you as much a new computer.

Nobody gives away software for Servers, unless we're talking Unix.

I run Windows 2000 Advanced Server at home. Runs like a champ. I've had no problems with anti-virus, software, games, etc. All run fine.

The *only* problem I had was a few pritners i bought -- did NOT have win2k server printer drivers. Nice little 3in1 HP printer could not work with it cuz they didn't have server printer drivers for it yet. :(

but other than that -- stable as FUCK!

worst comes to worst I can install it and if it sucks I can remove it?

I would think it's better that the win98 I have on my computer now...and since I have the win 2000 server disk here at work I might as well bring it home and install it

anyone on the NT edition....sorry for bumping but I'm leaving work soon and would like to see if I can get more feedback
