Here's another good bit of info I found while searching that I thought would be usefull This is tells the melting points for alot of different powders incase you need to do a MP test.

Convert Celsius to Farenheit:
1) Determine the temperature in Celsius
2) Using your calculator, multiply the temperature times 1.8
3) Add 32 to the result
4) Your final answer is the temperature in Fahrenheit

I'm still new to the homebrew scene.. So would you want to stay under these temps when heating your gear?

No the melting points help you to determine a.) if your powder is what you think it is and b.) how pure is it

It's not the best way to test but it's fairly easy to do there are a couple different methods of doing so and it's alot better than not testing it at all.

One way of doing the MP (melting point) test is to get a hot plate and cover it with aluminum foil and get a thermometor place your powder on the hot plate turn it to whatever temp you need and put the tip of the thermometor on the foil to get a temp read out write down the temp when it first starts to melt and write down the temp at which its completely melted and average the two temps and you have the melting point of your powder.

the other has to do with boiling water (you will have to add some oil so the boiling point of the water will go higher than 100c) and placing your powder in a tube and holding it in the boiling water and using a thermometor to get the temp read outs im not so sure on that method though.

you can also do this in a oven but I havent tried that so i'm not realy sure how to tell you how to perform that MP test
 
Right, I know of the MP test. I trust my source on the powder so that isn't a problem. What I'm saying is, when you drop the powder in the ba/bb, and you heat/stir, and then add the oil and heat/stir again. You would want to avoid getting to or over these temps?
 
You wont have to worry about going over these temps because the time it takes to disolve into solution while being heated and stirred isnt long enough to reach these temps for the most part and I use a pan with boiling water to disolve the powders while in the ba/bb and the max temp of boiling water on the stove with nothing added is like 100c which isnt close to the melting point of the powders I have you have to add oil or another substance to the water to get it to go above 100c
 
Good stuff thanks bro. I was just worried about it because I was going to get a hotplate/stirrer instead of using the boiled water tecnique, call me lazy, but I figure I could cap my pills while it stirs and whatnot
 
yea I was thinking about getting a hotplate aswell but I cant find any small ones for cheap and I realy dont wanna spend alot of cash on a hot plate so i'll just go with the ghetto boiling water technique I would love to try the hotplate though looks easier than holding it the whole time
 
Yea cheapest I found on ebay was like 170 I think. It isn't cheap, but eh will cut down on my time in the "lab" and allows me to be lazy :).
