You definitely need some eggs (even just plain egg whites) to help hold the meat together. The eggs also help add a little moisture so they don't dry out.

need2 is a chef. I bet he knows how to make some great meatballs.

agreed. . .i also use some ground pork along with the ground beef and i bake mine in the oven before they hit the sauce (instead of frying them on top of the stove). . .
