measuring body fat %

I always use the biolectrical impedence method....preferably with contact point both in the hands and feet for a more true reading. These aren't so good with bodybuilders as they'll often be dehydrated or using substances which will affect the reading.
This is less intrusive and quicker than the caliper method.
The best is underwater weighing, but I haven't got access to that!

your talking about the handheld devices right? im actually getting ready to get hired as a trainer...im just curious as to what other people use.

Yes, some are hand held, but the best also take a reading from the feet,as well as the hands to give a more true reading.
Hand held devices will tend to give a more valid reading for the upper extremity of the body, where as the feet only will give a more "lower body" reading.

Electronic impedance is easy. They tend to be very inaccurate depending on water levels in the body. If you can get your hands on a "Tanita Scale", then you're golden.

Calipers aren't hard to use, but hydrostatic is the truest measurement

The Bioelectrial Impedance method is good, but pay attention to your client's health. The BEI method is contraindicated for those with some surgically implanted appliances (i.e. pacemaker).

I use the Durnin 4 fold caliper method (Bi, Tri, Sub Scap, Illiac Crest) Method. The main idea for a trainer is to use the method to make sure a client is loosing fat or gaining muscle. Therefore, the measurements are realitive to one another and the absolute scale isn't that important for most clients. For example, client measurement 1 is 15% then 13% then 10%. So you know you're going in the right direction.

Hydrostatic weighing is still the gold standard.

How do you all feel about the bod pod? I was pumped about using it -- but it really is depressing, I was tested every 2 weeks for a few months to no avail -- I counted calories and worked out harder and stronger then ever before.. Even stepped up my cardio... I would go down a prcnt or 2 or 3, then come right back up -- which was pretty annoying so I am wondering what you all think of the bodpod?

Yeah I use one of these too - but they can be all over the place which is annoying - I'll often hide the results from clients and just show them after a few months if there's a positive overall trend - I also do measurements which I feel are a better measure of total body fat loss, and of course weight - all the numbers together should give you a good picture of what's going on -

I noticed on Jackie Warner's show that they had the tank in a truck and it came to you - If anyone's got the name of the company offering that service, that's an option in some situations (obviously not if you're training at Bally's)-
