Meal Timing before bed when on gear.....

How many bros eat within 10 minutes of sleeping? Either pro/fats or pro/carbs? My 2nd to last meal is my dext/whey shake and can't get in another meal until I'm literally in bed (1.5hrs later)........I always have had another shake of pro/fats like muscle milk or casein and peanuts. What do you do? Anyone wake up in the middle of the night and eat? Last facet of this game that really has me baffeled.....bedtime and calorie storage has me confused. Thanks.

I will have a cup of cottage cheese or a whey / casein shake. I usually get up between 1-2AM and hit another 20 grams of protein shake then back to bed for a couple more hours!!!

I imagine you will get quite a few different anwsers on this one - it does depend on what your goals are - here is what I do.

I am tryng to gain lean muscle mass so I take 50g of casein about an hour before I go to bed because it is a slow digesting protein that takes 6-7 hours to digest. In theory, this is feeding my muscles when my body is in a high state of catabolism. I have also read studies that L-Glutamine and other anti-oxidants should also be taken before bed but I have problems sleeping so I limit my pre-sleep intake to casein. I also throw in flax seed oil. We have a powerlifter at the gym and he gets up at 3 am and has a shake ready to drink - then again he benches 500+ pounds and has different goals than I do.

To debunk what I just wrote I have read studies that state eating before bed interferes with your body recuperating - the body is spending energy digesting food rather than repairing muscle. I do not have any recovery problems so taking a shake before bed is not a problem for me.

On another note, I have read that if you are trying to cut fat and lose weight it is smart to limit your eating between 8-10 hours throughout the day. For example if the first meal is at 8 am the last meal should be at 6 pm at the latest - this kick-starts the metabolism – I have done this and from my experience it works very good. The drawback on this for me now is I need a high protein intake and if I were to hit this schedule right now I would sacrifice muscle. My goal throughout the day is to average 50g of protein every 2 hours and skipping meals from 6 pm to 10pm cuts back on that a little.

See, I train and finish up around 630...have my shake about 7 and only have time for one more (gotta be another shake) before bed which usually is like 5 mins prior to.....is this a bad idea to be eating so close to sleeping?

It's not that it's close to bed as much as it's that your insulin lvls are gonna be high still from the post workout drink...... That's my biggest concern if youre thinking of consuming any fat in this "last shake" before bed......

When training for size eating before bed and in the middle of the night is a must imnsho. I like protien drinks-but I end having to piss all night long.

I don't think it's a bad idea. I normally eat 1 cup of low fat cottage cheese or a small whey shake and 1 tablespoon of natural peanut butter about 20 minutes before bed. I still wake up VERY hungry in the AM.

i'm with him on this... i'd say get in a nice weight gainer shake in the middle of the night... keep it ready before you sleep, set the alarm to wake you 4 hours after you get into bed, chug it down and hit the sack again. there are probably some who will make some arguments against this but i say your gains are going to be more.... assuming that this is an extra meal over and above what you'd be getting otherwise.

That's what I'm thinkin. So it would depend on your goals. If bulking, try protein/fat and see how it goes. If cutting, judt do protein. Trial and error is always part of the game at some point.

i eat the same on a cut or a bulk

i.e. cottage cheese and udos oil before bed

the amount changes tho on a cut im on 100g of CC and 1 tbps of oil on a bulk quadruple it.

then on a cut nothing whilst i spleep wake up and get a whey shake 45mins steady state cardio and then brekky

on a bulk

when i wake up it is a whey shake and milk and whey on wkaing then 30mins later brekky.

When on gear any time is a good time to eat.

Dude set up your alarm clock to wake you up in the middle of sleep and have a protein shake handy when you wake up. Drink it up then go to sleep. As far as getting to sleep, i would say eat up 25 minutes before you going to hit the sack.

Now i dont know what your intentions are, but im saying this as if you are going for the mass, and this is what worked for me in my quest for mass.

I agree! I have a friend that competes and the other who powerlifts and they both do the middle of the night shake. Only down-fall is not staying in a deep sleep, pissing often at night and running the risk of not falling asleep as well as you did at first. But it is beneficial as far as the bulking is concerned.

If your going to eat before bed why not eat Turkey???
The tryptophan in the turkey will help you sleep. Well that's what i'm going to do.

Thanx

Cottage cheese (casein) and berries!! Works for me! :qt:

I'm just going to have a half pound of turkey, i think that should be enough. Not sure about how much protein but it's about the same as chicken. Chicken has about 140 grams of protein per pound.

yep... what i was thinking, but i'd differ slightly on this. for cutting i'd have a LITTLE fat with the protein. JMO

I prefer shaved pussy. But usually before bed it's eggs w/ ketchup and tabasco. In the middle of the night I opt for a high protein cereal w/ lactaid.

Gotta love TABASCO...

I have either 8 eggs / 1 white with plenty tabasco, or a whey shake with some low fat cottage cheese, I'll make another whey shake and wake up once or twice in the night for a piss and have a couple of sips of that shake...
