MD and Holistic Medicine

What do you think of Holistic Healing? ( Raki, healing hands, energy force, accupuncture, etc.)

Went to a new doc today because my current primary care doc pissed me off with his lack of action. He was never willing to give me tests or write scripts is asked. He was always telline me "CK, its ok to be fat as long as you colesterol and blood pressure are ok now, etc, etc."... He is an Indian too, with a bad accent. I brought this guy a copy of my workout and diet journal once which cover 60 days in detail and asked him to review it with me to see where I was going wrong since I've been unable to drop the last 20-30# I need to reach my goal. He just laughed at it and said he didn't have time now and would look at it later!

Well I said WTF, and fired his ass... Now I was in search for a new primary care doc.

I figured I need a doc that is more 'open' and assertive in treating chronic things the 95% of America just lives with... I open the yellow pages and find Holistic Healing. One MD pops out of the page at me and I think damn, a MD in holistic healing? I got to check this out!

I went to see her today for a 1/2 hour consult. I tell her my story and ask her to explain her care philosphy. She starts off well explaining the traditional approach, blood screens, etc, pharmacy script (.. I told he I thought my testosterone levels were too low!). She says that she is willing to write scripts for me to try stuff out after the physical.. Sound great huh!?

Well, then she goes on a tangent and starts talking about the 'energy force' inside my body and how I have to bring it into alingment too in order to receive complete 'healing'. She tells me "It breaks down into the simple elements of matter and anti-matter and balancing the engery needs within your body..blah, blah, blah"... " I'm like, WTF? Are you serious? you want to align my energy fields with your hands over my body? Is that naked or clothed? You know I'm married, right? Is this covered by Blue Cross?"....

Do you think I should go back to see her or keep looking for another doc?

I think you pretty much answered your own question...

Your doctor is probably trained in Chinese medicine which works with energy, chi. Working with the energy is the whole point of accupuncture, which works, so I wouldn't dismiss her out of hand. What happens, unfortunately, is that a lot of energy medicine gets filtered through New Age language and ends up being quite degraded.

Alternative Medicine Especially Eastern AcuPuncture/Pressure
and Herbal meds are growing in acceptance even in the Western MD minds. Scientific studies have actually verified it's efficacy in some situations. They have been doing this stuff for thosands of years vs the western 100 or so.

Of course the way far out healing hands and mystical surgery stuff is pretty weak and likely B.S. IMO...

I have used both Accupuncture and Herbal therepy for Chronic issues(Low chronic Back pain, Arthritus, etc) AFTER my western MD has done what they can.

This style of medicine has it's place. I would not want to rely on it for instance heart disease or a torn ACL...

Actually there is a huge amount of research indicating the value of touch in healing. The mystical surgery is total crap. I once was assigned by a magazine to visit a Mexican curandero who supposedly removed unhealthy tissue from the body. I grabbed the shit and sprinted out of the office, got it analyzed. It wud sum reel good mutilated chicken organs. The wackiest scam I've ever seen was a woman who claimed to be channeling dolphin surgeons.

If the physician listens and provides you with therapy and tests that you request, then keep him/her, it is hard to find any that wish to hear what you have to say. And even more rare to find those who take kindly to questioning.

I believe that holistic healing (a phrase that is taking on too broad a meaning) has some validity, and can be useful. What I do disagree with is the rationale that is being used to explain some of these alternative therapies. The understanding of how a therapy works can be wrong, yet the therapy can still work. The biggest problem is how these practitioners do not wish to explain them in physiological terms, but metaphysical nonsense. They have an enormous bias against scientific reasoning, which they hypocritically charge against the medical community.

The touch I was referring to was the instant healing variety.

Prayer also has been Scientifically validated as having positive benefit.
