MBA: is it worth something ?

Was wondering how was the MBA seen in the US. Here the MBA is slowly losing its reputation. Recently there was an article in the Globe Mail, by an expert explaining how it was such a waste of time and that experience was way better.

Only if you put it in use! Othwise it is worthless! The Doctoral is is preferred by me over the MBA!

Its not that the value of an MBA education is losing its value in my opinion. Experience is essential, but so is agood grasp of management theory and application. A good MBA program will help you prepare for a lot of things you will need to do in the future such as business analysis, presentations, etc. However, for the types of jobs that are being created today an MBA is not as important. An MBA becomes more useful farther up the corporate ladder, and most people start out a little lower. So a run of the mill generic MBA might not make enough of a difference in most peoples' careers to make it worthwhile. But if you are seeking a higher position with a strong company, a good MBA with a suitable class ranking is absolutely essential. But less and less of these positions are out there now due to the economic downturns, and the exporting of operations abroad.

Definitely better than an IT-related degree, these days. The combination, however, is a good one. My impression is that MBAs are still valued, especially if considering a field like management consulting/strategy, investment banking, etc...

Our MBA programs bearconsiderable responsiblity for the destruction of a lot of great things. Too many to mention here. Millions and millions and jobs have been turned to shit by some dude with an MBA.

You don't even wanna know how many MBA's are struggling to find any kind of job these days.

MBA in 2003 means a LOT less than a having an MBA in say 1974.

Only thing that might stand out these days is getting an MBA from say Harvard or Stanford. If not, it's just another MBA.

Well back in the time you refered to MBA's were not needed as much as they are today. Many people in investment banking and such got extremely far without an MBA.

Now these days most Investment banking jobs won't even consider someone without an MBA.

IN SOME AREAS, AN MBA IS ESSENTIAL. NO MATTER HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE YOU HAVE. BUT YES, IT IS LOSING ITS VALUE SLIGHTLY DUE TO SATURATION. THERE ARE MORE APPLICANTS WITH AN MBA FOR THE SAME JOB THESE DAYS.

BUT MY OPINION IS THAT IT CAN ONLY HELP YOU. IN MY FEILD, AN MBA RELATES TO AN AVERAGE OF $10K MORE PER YEAR AS OPPOSED TO NOT HAVING ONE.

well in the sense that you are saying that "losing value" means in a sense that they are a dime a dozen, this is true.

But this is the same for a BA degree...they might be a dime a dozen but these days it's still needed for most jobs.

So saying that they aren't needed any more is wrong cause they are basically a requirment for certain jobs these days.

That's cuz so many people are out of work, that they set the requirements even higher now (mba, 4 years exp) to cut down on the plethora of applicants. It's like that in many job circles.

But the new grads should not fear. Many companies are trying to save money by hiring new people and paying them pathetically low salaries. Cuz they can.

My girlfriends Uncle runs a hedgefund and he was saying that these days you can find superb people to hire. This is because with so many people out of jobs in the finance job market many experienced people are looking for work.

So new grads around this time will have trouble competing with these people.

Fuck all that. I work for myself and even hire help sometimes. I got a BS from a basically a party school. I went into business for myself basically because I was fired and the job market is so pathetic today. I know I can't get by on $12 an hour which for the most part I was lucky to even find a job paying that.

Duplication services. Legimate and not so legimate. As long as the money I'm paid legimate and green that what matters to me. I bought a couple of stand alone CD burning units and a DVD one too. I may have put $1,500 into equipment. I do ok for myself. I also do a little freelance IT technical support.

The problem is that MBA's have become too easy to earn.

Almost anyone can qualify to study for an MBA, which defeats the original intent of their usefulness and application.

The requirements to get into an MBA course should be tightened and restricted to those who have a first degree, and who can 'prove' that they are in positions of senior management and have been for a number of years.

The whole intent of an MBA is to make managers better managers........not to turn graduates into managers, which is basically what they have become.

I don't know about the US, but over here, almost anyone with a first degree can walk into an MBA by bullshitting about their experience.

There was an article in the Wall Street Journal about it. It pretty much said right now it evens out in the end. The money you would have made while in school vs the money you will make after you get your MBA.
Right now the job market sux in IT so I'm looking at more school.

VINYL........YOU CANT GET INTO A MASTERS PROGRAM WITHOUT A BACHELORS DEGREE. I THINK YOU ARE REFERRING TO IT AS A FIRST DEGREE.

BACHELORS=UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM
MASTERS=GRADUATE PROGRAM

No doubt...Thats true.

Another thing I heard awhile ago with MBA programs is that a company I beleive wanted to make a test that would rank students in a similar way as SAT's or your ranking in the overall class. I think the problem was that they couldn't find a way to make the stats mean anything. Such as a way of comparing the scores.

YEAH, THAT WOULDNT MAKE ANY SENSE ANYWAY AS HANDS ON TRAINING WILL TEACH YOU A HELL OF A LOT AFTER YOU GET YOUR DEGREE. THE DEGREE JUST MEANS YOU ARE COMPETENT ENOUGH TO GET THROUGH COLLEGE AND THAT YOU ARE MANAGEMENT MATERIAL.

TO ME, THE DEGREE COUPLED WITH HANDS ON TRAINING IS MUCH MUCH BETTER.
