Marines line up on Iranian border
By Anton La Guardia, Diplomatic Editor

Royal Marines were deployed to Iraq's border with Iran yesterday in a move that will unnerve Teheran's regime, which fears encirclement by American-led forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Defence said the Royal Marines were merely "securing their area of operations" after seizing at the Faw peninsula.

But with Iranian troops manning positions on the other side of the Shatt al-Arab waterway, British forces face a highly sensitive task.

Tensions were illustrated by a succession of border incidents. A rocket struck an Iranian oil refinery depot in Abadan, just across from Basra, on Friday injuring two people while there were reports on Monday that Iranian forces had fired on British troops on the Faw peninsula.

Iran, part of America's "axis of evil", is formally neutral but fears it could be the next target for attack.

It is torn between publicly denouncing the "imperialist" war on a fellow Muslim country and co-operating tacitly with America and Britain in removing the old enemy, Saddam Hussein.

America has waged war against two of Iran's most hated foes, the former Taliban regime in Afghanistan and the Ba'athists in Baghdad. But the "Great Satan", as America is known, now has forces on two of Iran's borders.

Neighbouring Arab countries have long feared a war in Iraq could suck in forces from Turkey and Iran.

Western diplomats said Turkish intervention to forestall any Kurdish attempt to seize greater autonomy could encourage Iran to cross the border to support fellow Shi'ites and clear out bases of the main Iranian opposition group, the Mujahideen-e-Khalq.

The leading Iraqi Shi'ite opposition group, the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution, has thousands of fighters in Iran. Some have slipped into Iraqi Kurdistan and many more may cross the border to claim a stake in the future Iraqi government.

i'm keeping my fingers crossed. :)

crap.....hopefully nothing will go down. the iranians are supposed to be dug in, lets hope they stay there

Nothing will happen.

"The Ministry of Defence said the Royal Marines were merely "securing their area of operations" after seizing at the Faw peninsula."

God only hopes the coalition leaders arent that stupid.

How could they be? It has taken 12 years of failed UN resolutions, endless under the table deals, and 23 years of dictatorship to justify removing Saddam. There are none of these justifications to attack Iran. The response would be 10x as anti-war if we attacked Iran.

Besides, Iran is reforming politically. We should give money & training to reformists so they can change the government. It will be easier.

You forgot about the fact that the US would have their ass handed to them if they invaded.

diplomacy, how to carry out political campaigns, how to get the word out, how to effect people's opinions.

Psychological warfare basically.

LOL. Maybe Allah will protect them.

Think Vietnam times 100 with modern weapons and people who are not afraid to die.

The Greeks, Romans, Ottamans, Mongols and Arabs could not defeat the Persians in the past 6000 years. What makes you think the US can do it?

In 1981-89, 114 countries including the US and the UK backed Iraq in a war against Iran and Iran came out victorious and with more land than when they started.

People easily forget about those facts.

I just looked at a website about 4 hours ago, most powerful countries (Spain, UK, France, Germany, USSR, USA) backed both Iran & Iraq at different times. Maybe all of them wanted to bleed both countries dry. Would anyone want Iraq to control Iran's oil? how about Iran controlling Iraq's oil. How about Iraq controlling Kuwaits oil? nope on all counts.

Is Iran still like that? i thought it was more moderate now. Besides, we aren't going to war on Iran they have done nothing.

Bingo. Basically we wanted both countries to destroy each other. The whole Iran-Contra affair plays into this, and this is the point when Saddam got pissed at us. We were supporting him during the war and when it came public that we were sending weapons to Iran, he declared the U.S. his mortal enemy.

Let me tell you one quick story about Iranians and war.

When the Dirty Mollahs took over in 1979, they put all of the general in prison. When the Iraqi army crossed into Persian land, the generals were asked to push them back. When Baghdad was within an hour of being sacked, the generals told their troops to halt. When asked why, they replied to the Mollahs that they were fighting for Iran, not for them. once Iran was safe, they stopped fighting and were put back in prison.

Another example is the miles and miles of mines that the Iraqi had laid at the border. After the donkeys refused to go through the fields (after seeing their buddies get ripped apart), Iranian children from ages 4-15 were given a plastic key (made in Taiwan) and told that was the key to heaven and they held hands and cleared the mines (with their lives) while singing children's songs. These were just the children and they were not coerced. That is one example of the will of the Iranian people.

No one has ever or will ever invade and conquer the Persian people. Not unless every single one is wiped off the face of the earth.

They fight for their culture and their identity, not some temporary government.
