Marijuana and The Bodybuilder

I posted this question in another thread but noone really had any specific input. Exactly what effects does marijuana have on the bodybuilder? I understand not to smoke preworkout but what are all the positive and negative effects of smoking marijuana habitually and weighttraining at the same time? (it sure helps with bulking though!)
 
Not sure how it affects you physically (aside from in your brain and that it dialates blood vessels in a very nice way). I recall a study saying it increases estrogen but that may be bs.

Speaking as a long term weed smoker, I can tell you that it is hell on the diet. It may be the strains I have had lately that have given me monstrous munchies, but I finally went off it this weekend to get my weight down. Unless you use a vapourizer or a water bong, it is taking a toll on your lungs as well.

Bottom line is that if you are getting to where you want in your training and your doctor doesn't hear something strange when you breathe in and out, keep doing what you're doing. It is a helluva lot better than drinking alcohol. Your doctor will confirm that.
 
Thanks hc73, Im interested to know if anyone has anymore input in this topic seeing as how im very serious about my bodybuilding so i want to make sure im not TOO ADVERSELY impacting my gains.
 
dude i have been smoking weed and workin out religiously for over 2 years.....

i dont even enjoy drinking anymore.....alcohol WILL lower your test levels, marijuana has NO effect on testosterone levels.......and because you dont smoke it as much as cigs i havent found at all that it slows my cardio down a bit.....

weed actually speeds up your metabolism.......but its not significant enough as eating 6 times a day

the only drawback i have had in the past with weed is that i get so damn hungry when im high.....and its hard not to pig out.....but if you train yourself to just keep the munchies to a minimum, you wont even be that hungry when u smoke.....(drink alot of water when stoned, you get your daily water supply in and it keeps you from munching)

Weed as well as alcohol and cigarettes do play havac on vitamins. especially b complex and C.
So a supplementation of these will be needed.
 
There is a famous study done on monkeys and marijuana. One monkey went clinically insane or something... a wierd outlier... but the only long major term side effect noted was on motivation, the inhibition of it.

For me, weed makes me f up my clean diet, and makes feel like I am not in 100% control of my situation, which is a feeling I find I don't quite like.

For many lifters, it is a great, even essential, part of their lifestyle.

If you enjoy it, if it doesn't stop you from reaching your goals, and you can fit it into your lifestyle, there is no reason not to do it.

Personally, it's just not compatible with my goals in the gym and in life, so I keep it to all but the rarest of occasions, hopefully one day even less.
 
once and a while is ok sometimes before I work out I can really get in the zone but it is still better to be sober.

I have no idea what weed would do as far as negative effect. some of my buddies at the gym don't work out if they don't smoke out before working out.. I'm not a pot head LOL

haha pill popper.... I like smoking after I hit the gym its relaxing...I started smoking after I was off cycle 600mg EQ made me hungry enough maybe Ill throw in 1gram of hydro for a nice bulk cycle =)

Let me just respond to a few points in this thread. About 11 years ago when I was in law school I worked on a criminal case involving hemp vs scheduled marijuana (different THC levels and cops do not test that) so my detailed scientific research may be outdated:

1. The "monkey" study involved 5 monkeys who were essentially gas masked with hoses that only spit out marijuana smoke. The monkeys all died after 5 minutes from massive brain damage which was the basis for the claim that weed kills brain cells. What this study neglects to highlight is that the monkeys were breathing in nothing but smoke and died from oxygen deprivation which is what killed their brain cells. As for motivation, if pot makes you unmotiavetd then you are a lazy Type B personality to start off with. I can smoke weed and am up for anything. I have never smoked before a workout however.

2. Positive effects from marijuana include blood vessel dialation which increases blood flow to your muscles. This helps with healing and thus building. In addition, it also relaxes your muscles which leads to the same benefit. As for vitamins, always take a multivitamin and Omega 3-6-9 supps. Remember, marijuana was used for thousands of years as a medicinal drug (moderation) and was outlawed in the 1920s with the political influence of the Dupont family who feared competition from hemp fibres with their synthetic fabrics we all know and love.

Frankly, this is a non-issue unless it makes you eat like a pig. You are wasting time thinking about this when you could be training. If you don't stop, I will find you and smoke you up!
 
I heard that smoking post-workout helps to lower cortisol levels. I've never seen any studies on this.....can anyone verify this?

I love to smoke post workout, but pre-workout I'm worthless.
 
I know one thing for absolute certainty: I smoke 4 to 5 times a day for the past year and my gains are awesome. To be honest I workout with about 5 other people and my gains have consistently been better than any of these nonsmokers. Not to say that weed has helped me, but i know that I've grown faster than them so its gotta be something :p ...I wonder if i can still call myself natty :P
 
I smoke weed. You gotta have some real control if you're dieting down on it. I always say this, Sugar-Free Jello, is great to have around if you get hungry and have cotton mouth. I'll eat the whole six-pack, but better that than a pint of Ben n' Jerry's. It is instant relaxation for me. When I was younger I could smoke all day long. Now I get tired and very sluggish if I smoke early on in the day. It's pretty much a pre-bed ritual for me. Hasn't had any negative impact on my workouts all these years (I have never smoked before hittin the weights). Better than alcohol IMO also. I drink very rarely myself. I can count on one hand how many times during the year.
 
Same, alcohol is a non-issue for me. I do of course avoid smoking preworkout. Some say they can 'hyperfocus' on the weight while their high...wtfever. But it is good to know im not the only person who smokes so often and still lifts weights regularly without an impacted physique.
 
i have never drank a drop of alcholol and never ever intend to, once i tried beer tastes like piss lool still i blaze the green. i'd do it once or twice a month and maybe even less than that mainly because it makes me dopey and it is estrogenic so unless nolvadex is on hand loooooool
 
only one thing is better than all of these and it is in the excerpt from chemical wizzadry on this site and you have to make it. it increases you hgh levels and you never will get hung over and is healty for you and is all around wonderfull stuff, you just have to figure out where to get it or the ingrediants. i cant find them?? wish i could. its the best! you never will wake up dehydrated of hung over. you will wake up feeling like a IFBB pro.
I fucking hate alchola but i drink every weekend.

you see him taking a hit off a joint in the movie. It doesn't mean that he smoked weed everyday at all, but at least we know he wasn't terrified of the stuff. Since it was after his contest during his post-contest cheat meal, he could have been saving the weed for after the contest, thus, an opposite conclusion could be drawn.
