Father Arrested At Graduation After Bomb Joke

Police Say They Take Bomb Jokes Seriously

INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis man who went to his daughter's high school graduation spent the night in jail instead after joking that he had a bomb in his camera case.

Sixty-one-year-old Douglas Merrill was in the city-county lockup Friday morning on preliminary charges of terroristic mischief, false reporting and intimidation.

He could face up to 12 years in prison if he's convicted.

Police say Merrill was attending North Central High School's commencement at the Pepsi Coliseum last night when he told a ticket taker who was checking bags that there was a bomb in his camera case.

Bomb experts who examined the case found it actually contained a camcorder.

State police Sgt. Jon Smithers says police take such jokes seriously now.

Off with his head, then prison rape him!

Remember Police Say They Take Bomb Jokes Seriously!

he'll never see the inside of a prison. they just want to warn others

if he does thats linda fucked up. just fine himcommunity service

why even fine him, let alone put him in prison?

the ticket taker opened his bag immegiately, and saw there was no bomb, none of the ceremonies were delayed, people didn't storm out of the building from fear. NOTHING HAPPENED.

maybe if his joke caused severe panic and people were killed trying to exit, then maybe charge him with something. but if nothing happened, dont fucking charge/fine/detain/imprison him for a stupid 'joke'.

at 61 years old that cock suckers got a good 20 year left he can serve behind bars for this one...just think, that basterd probably had some sort of conspiracy going on, maybe even tied in with one of them talibans

He should have spent the night in jail for being a dumbass, maybe a minor fine but that's all

some guy called me a terroist the other day for having a IRA tattoo and I responded by saying then I guess you best watch the next time you start you car. guess the cops are coming for me to

my greatgrandfather was IRA before coming over and we still have ties and I know quite a few members spread out Eire.

I normally wouldnt have said that but he is a pro american/bush admin asshole who likes to butt into others conversations

They should set an example with this guy...in this day and age you should not be joking about shit like that. common sense

So people without common sense should be locked up and/or punished due to percieved low intelligence? How about people with schizophrenia and bipolar? Then we can move onto people with Down's Syndrome.

The guy was obviously joking around....just because he didn't have enough "common sense" not to make a non-PC joke doesn't mean he should go to jail. If the POLICE ADMIT THEY KNOW HE IS JOKING, how can they say this man deserves to be arrested, and possibly face 12 years in jail, for making what the police percieved to be an insensitive and sarcastic joke? I'll tell you why........because it makes fun of the stupidity of the misguided war on terror, as well as the resulting hyper-sensitive to anything that bashes Bush Administration nonsense such as the Patriot Act. It seems that no one, whether citizen or politician, cannot make a serious statement---or joke---about terrorism without the Bush Administration-backed law enforcement community attacking them and their rights.

yeah, i think this is why the article says he faces a possible fine. i hope its a quote from a gvernment spokesman rather than the paper frightening the people

in realit i think a minor fine is best at the most, but people have to realise pranks and stuff are a bad idea. normally taking him thru the ordeal of justifying he isnt a bad guy while in jail overnight is punishment enough

on another note your looking a lot bigger in your avatar! :)

Peoples' lives should not be used for examples.
