Machines or Free Weights?

Just wondering what all you guys are doing to get huge. I am going to start my cycle soon, and would like to know what other juiceheads are lifting with.

I personally feel like I get a better workout in my chest and shoulders from machines, but arms for sure dumbells.

Now, my question, if I was just to stick to strictly machines, and of course upping weight at all times, could I build the same amount of mass as using free weights? I am wondering because machines tend to feel better on my joints (especially my bad left shoulder). Would I be wasting my time on machines or should I just stick to free weights? Thanks in advance....

PS- Sorry if this wasnt meant for the anabolics section, but I want to know the juicer's opinions on this... so please do not move this thread if possible.

Use both, its not like a religious choice. For the "free weights only" guys- what free weight exercises beside Squats do you do for you legs. What free weight exercises for your calves? For your back?

legs: squats, lunges, step ups.
calves: calf raises with a barbell accross your back
back: bent over dumbell rows, barbell rows, deadlift
i prefer free weights as you may have noticed...free weights really hit stabalizer muscles where machines do not. also, compare how pumped up you feel when your watching yourself in the mirror, destroying your muscles with heavy dumbells, and then do the same for a machine. no comparison.

I use both and get a hellacious workout from both- as long as I go heavy on both. If you go lighter on machines than you do on free weights, then no they arent as good. They are just tools and your muscles have no idea what your hands are holding.

I tend to think free for the majority...but I also feel it's good to hit some of the machines occasionally to hit the muscles differently (pec deck)

I would never do a tricep workout without pushdowns. Do both, you can see what machines have done for the IFBB pros. Look at past pros when they didnt have machines, and now when we do.:D

Free weights. Was told long ago it is about controlling the weight, not how much you can bounce off of your chest. There is no control with machines. Of course I do hit machines but it is to focus on one muscle, and at the end of the workout.:mix:

IMO, well-designed machines are superior to free weights for most movements. I do believe that bodybuilders should perfect their form with free weights before moving on to machines, however.

Flame away.

yeah I'm gonna shoot some roids in my bum too, can any of you guys tell me how to work out? or do I even have too?

LOL.

depends on the muclegroup. i might do i or 2 machine movments if i feel that it will help develpe a muscle. like for instance low pulley rows for back, pushdowns for triceps, lex ext for quads, leg curls for hams, calf raise for (suprise) calves. people who are saying machine movments arent worth shit are wrong. they may not require as much help from other muscles, both they do help you focus one that one musclegroup.

Use both.

My leg workout uses 3 machines - well, 4 if you count the standing smith calf raise. <---this is all the smith is good for.

I use a 3" high DIY box and put a few 20kg plates on the opposite side so it doesn't fly up and crack my shins. Make sure you get well under the bar though, or else you'll feel a nasty stretch in your chest, especially when you start using big weights.

thanks man..im gonna have my lil bro try it. he maxes out the damn calf raise machine..he got monster calves...sucks

ours goes to 250kg...he has three trunks for legs...always been that way..thanks to our 10 years of track and field..he was a triple jumper..so his calves are like HUGE...pisses me off..we train exactly alike..and his legs are much thicker and fuller than mine...but he DOES only reach me to my chest....so he has an advantage of being short..and chubby :P

im no expert by far. but i know the basics. and ive learned from my mistake, and others, you never do get it down a 100%. you know the science and how it is supposed to be done. but then all of a sudden your body reacts a whole different way. and you have to try out sumthing else.

being a natty, having the right diet and training scheduel is crucial i think.

I would definitely agree 100% that freeweights are better overall mass-builders than machines. I have never been an advocate of machines or cables at all. I go as far as prefering dumbbells more than barbells to REALLY isolate each stabilizer muscle completely. I mean if you are looking to tone or maintain maybe machines have their place in the overall scheme of things but nothing beats freeweights. :D

both of course

I start all my workouts pounding the iron heavy as many of you may have noticed from my previous posts I dont believe in overtraining. I will go for as many as 30-35 sets a muscle group how I do this is splitting the sets between the iron and the machines. I get a great pump and burn from the iron but the machines at the end let me know that I am completely exausting the muscle fibers till there are many days that I cannot drive home from the gym my girl needs to especially leg day. Dont limit your bodies gains by not using all the possible tools that are available to help it grow just cause your ego says dont use the machines. That is just ignorant
