lt. weight high reps vs.....

hey my friends...been awhile. good to be back.
throwing out a topic to debate....(mostly to prove a point to my training partner)
my partner is 5'11" 212lbs about 17% bf...
his goal is to drop bf while gaining muscle mass (suprise, suprise)
well, he has decided to employ a personal trainer....
the trainer is telling him light weight, high reps, super sets...
assuming his diet is good, and supplementation is correct...
do you bro's feel this is the way to go? please, he needs some advice, other than mine. i am not a proponet of his trainers advice.
any thoughts please...
god bless

Diet is the key. I say stick to medium reps. 8-15 reps to failure. I dont go heavy anymore because I get injured more often and I feel the contraction of the muscle much better with lighter weights.

He really needs to find the median that suits him best. I think the diet is more important than the way he lifts. He has to experiment with weights and diet and he will find his groove. good luck!

I have seen people cut down and lift heavy and I have seen people cut down and lift light. I have seen people cut down and do No cardio and I have seen people cut down and do lots and lots of cardio. I could go on forever...I guess I should stop now.

You didnt touch on Diet?? Cutting or bulking has nothing to do with training! It is all Diet and cardio. It comes down to spending more calories than you eat. If you do this, you will lose fat. If you dont have an anabolic in you, you will lose muscle too.

Whether you lift heavy os light really makes no difference. I was just trying to give advice so that no matter what diet he does, he would greatly decrease the chance of injury if he didnt go heavy.

LAWNSAVER,

myoplex wrote..."assuming his diet is good, and supplementation is correct". I am assuming that his PT is an expert in nutrition and diet (I know I should NOT assume) so therefore I did not touch on diet. Although, I agree with you that diet is the key to success when trying to get "ripped". I have seen people get ready for bodybuilding shows and each had their own lifting techniques. Some stayed heavy and some lifted light and did lots of sets and reps.

I always lift heavy. I can never loose body fat and gain muscle mass together. I gain mass first then diet to loose fat. Each time I gain some muscle and look lean after I'm done. The juice helps me gain the mass.

Along those same lines, do you guys always go balls out as heavy as you can on each set or do you combine some high rep- lighter sets in with the heavy?

I stay heavy till i feel like im not getting stronger then ill go light for awhile and switch back. Going light sucks though.

Always heavy

I usually never go lite and ya it does suck. My dads cheap machine only has 100 sumthing pounds whcih is almost heavy enough 4 me and going lite sucks cause u never feel ur getting enough work on ur muscles.
