Low Testosterone - Blood Work

I got my blood test back yesterday. My total was 290, Percent of free testosterone 3.09, and free 89.7. The percent of free testosterone came in as out of range (1.5-2.2%) I am not an expert on this by any means, but why would the percent of free test be so high while the other numbers came in so low? Thanks for any help.

Because the amount of Testosterone used by the body as "free" from the total testosterone, is just about the 2%. So in theory, you can have a total testosterone level of 80, while still having high free test. If your total is 100, 30 will be 3%; it will be off the chart, but as a whole, it will be too low to support basic functions like for example, libido. You need to increase your total test levels, while keeping free test in range. As an example, the other hand, if your total test is 1000, and your free is 200, is the 2%; normal level, and the 200 number will have you horny as a bull. This is how the theory works.

Great explaination bro! Last time I got mine tested I was just over 1000 but that was only free testosterone. I asked the doctor for the FULL testosterone panel but he was incompetent so he only gave me Free. Guess I will have to go get it checked again to see what my body is actually using...

Of course. If SHBG is too high, you can have all the test in the world in your body, but the Free test will still be low.

Thanks for the replies. I understand now, basically 3% of nothing, is still nothing.

I am reluctant to go on HRT since I am prone to male pattern baldness and want to keep what I have left. I want to try some otc products like unleashed and have my testosterone tested again. I am interested in seeing the results.
