Looking for some tips on form and shoes

I do a lot of cardio on the elliptical at the gym because any time I try to run on actual turf I get a pain in my shins, like the muscles tighten up, and have to stop. I've been told that it could be that I am not running properly or I'm not wearing the proper running shoes

Any tips on proper running form would be greatly appreciated.

I would also like to get tips on some good running shoes in the price range of around $80 ($100 tops) if possible.

Step 1 - find runing store that does stride analysis
step 2 - go there and talk to an expert who knows his stuff and have the stride analysis done
step 3 - get shoes that they tell you to

Different people need different shoes. Most mass market shoes (foot locker, etc.) are only right for about 20% of the population.

what kinds of stores do stride analysis?

I used to have the same problem...shin splints, aching knees, etc from pavement. Back in March, I bought a pair of Nike Shox and have not had a single problem since, and I run at least 25 min 6 days/week.

I should soon have my 4th pair of Shox - The 2:45s. I intend to run the philly marathon in them. I'll post up a review soon.

I liked shox in the past but disliked the cleat-like uppers on the two pairs of TLs I have owned. I like the TL2 shoes now because they have a mesh upper.

I will never again buy running shoes that do not have a nearly total mesh upper again.
