Literacy Tests!

What is your opinion on this device?

In my humble opinion it just doesn't seem right that the vote of person A: who studies the issues to have their vote nullified by person B: who doesn't even know who the current V.P. is, or who is in control of Congress.

Is it really beneficial to allow people to vote for a candidate without being able to identify what their platform is, or the basics of the candidate's voting record?

I feel it's our civic duty to get informed on the issues. Should people who make no earnest effort to do so be allowed to vote?

Do they disenfranchise voters? Or Do they allow us to elect the best candidate?

Discuss.

(p.s. I realize it's a bit late with election season being over & what not, minus a recount or two in the senatorial races.)

P.s. I don't think that the tests would necessarily reflect intelligence, just basic political literacy/knowledge. I believe a simple test that checked for a grasp on the most basic fundamental aspects of our government and the respective candidates would suffice. But that's just me.

A person should be able to answer at least 4 or 5 out of 20 questions about government and politics before allowing to vote.

Yeah, I said it.

One of the main reasons I don't vote is because I don't believe I have any business doing so uninformed.

And yet I'll bet you are in at least the 98% percentile of the politically informed -- probably more.

I'm thinking about questions like:

True or false: Obama's running mate is Joe Biden

How many years does a US senator's term run?

How many US senators are there?

True of false: Supreme court justices are chosen by the president

And if you can get one in four correct, then you can vote.

Any objections?
