Wanting to pick up a good book when i order my text for next sem. I don’t want any of that lords of the ring or star trek jazz. I’m looking for something like aliens and alien planets ect. Never read any before and don’t know any good authors

This is old stuff that you might have better luck finding in the library than in the bookstore -- but it's good old stuff.

Poul Anderson, World Without Stars is the perfect sf novel.

Larry Niven, The Trouble Twisters. Your sf alien collection is not complete until you've met Chee Lan, Adzel, and Muddlehead.

Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle (co-authors) -- The Mote in God's Eye for aliens, Lucifer's Hammer if you want to see the movie that "Deep Impact" should have been.

Anything by Robert A. Heinlein -- his "kids" books are better than most so-called adult novels, and damn near all of his stuff is still in print.

Agreed.

Dune by Frank Herbert is quintessential great sci=fi.

The Other Sky-Landi Mellis(Creepy look at Aliens)

The Day After Roswell-Colonel Phillip Corso(Goes into how the gov recovered a delta shaped craft in 1947,and used various bits of items from it to forward our technological advances in several high tech fields.Quite fascinating whether one believes or not).

The Complete Guide To Mysterious Beings-John A. Keel(Author of the Mothman Prophecies)

The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. A funny classical Sci-fi book, by Douglas Adams

This is truly a story that almost anyone with any sense of humor at all will really enjoy. Seriously.

If you want real sci-fi, and I mean the good stuff that influenced everyone else, then get some Phillip K. Dick. He wrote a lot of things and most of it is pretty damn good. Flow My Tears the Policeman Said was good. So was Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep ? (Blade Runner was based on this). Lots of movies like Total Recall and Minority Report were all based on his books or short stories.

Some guy wrote a prequel book to the video game Halo. Sounds kind of dubious in quality, but the book was pretty entertaining, a good mindless sci-fi/action book. If you liked halo the game, grab the books.
