When you say I could just mix dextrose w/a protein drink does that mean PLAIN WHITE SUGAR that you could just buy from Publix or something??

That's not the best type of sugar to use- You can get dextrose really cheap at: http://www.supplementdirect.com/?content=52&product_id=10819
That should last you for awhile and would be what you're looking for.
