Life Changing Diagnosis

Boston medical center

You know Harvard is going ahead with their stem cell research center? They bypassed U.S. rules by using private donations to fund their center. They are looking for peeps to test stuff on.

You might as well fight it. There's a company in Mass who created a large stem cell line from placenta cord blood.

I will be the first one there willing to be tested on for sure. So they are gonna be able to do stem cell testing on humans within the US??? good info none the less... I will be looking into that!

where did you read about the center, interested in seeing what is going on with it.

It's been in the Boston Globe for the last two years. The school also has a seperate lab called The Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The second lab can test on stem cells not approved by the Bush administration because they are funded with private money.

Word on the street is that john hopkins now is joining the stem cell club and will be specializing in muscle waisting. I guess they were able to get a rat that was totally paralyzed to regain complete function. This is exciting!!!:)

Do you think having ALS would effect me getting into med school?

Probably not, but you should really ask yourself if this is something you want to do. Medical school is very, very demanding. It's not hard, just time consuming. You will have a limited (but will still have some) social life during medical school.

35 is very rare isnt it? My friends dad is the dean of a dental school and he said if I could pull a 32 I would be all good. Well Im scheduled to take it a 2nd time in august so hopefully I do better.

35 isn't too rare. A few people in my class made a 42-45, the highest possible. Of course these people had weird personalities. I scored a 33 and got into Harvard Med. 3.86 GPA.

Despite it's name, Harvard isn't the most competitive medical school. Duke receives about 8,000 applications each year, and Washington University in St. Louis is still the most competitive: AVERAGE 3.9 GPA and 39 MCAT. I'm still baffled by those numbers, and it's one reason I didn't even apply there!

Love those rats !!!!

BS, sorry for repeating myself if I mentioned this before, but I had my stem cells harvested for a bone marrow transplant (cross your fingers I don't need one) ... and of course it was DENIED by my insurance ... so my age/type/situation, the hospital that did it flipped the bill (upon which I just STOPPED gettinging billed for last year  ) go figure...

now it turns out the facitily that stores me stems, untouched my my cancer & chemo, is being 'closed down' ... maybe gov, maybe funding... WHATEVER .... so now in the future it was brought to my attention I may have to find a place to house them for potential use re: 2ndary cancers, namely bone marrow & leukemia or other blood related ones.

blah blah blah

And yes I have to PAY for it it ... woo hoo!!!

You've heard the saying "when it rains it pours ..."
