There is a type of SEO - refered to as 'BlackHat' - that use grey and even black techniques to influence, modify and outright hack the search results of search engines in order to drive traffic to their clients websites.

My understanding is that Phaded is not on the up and up.

SEO in and of itself isn't 'shady' - it all depends on how you approach it.

Some of the grey SEO's can make a fortune, but they have to be very very carefull because even grey techniques - if detected by the Search Engine's will land their clients sites in 'SandBoxes' or other punitive measures are taken - which can take them out of the game for years with no effective way to ajudicate the situation.

But yea, it's high risk... sandbox a few clients and word gets around and no one will hire you anymore. Use some blackhat techniques and get caught by yours truely... that ends even worse.
