Your from SD right? I need your help maing… I’m planning a trip to Diego this summer to look at the following schools to finish my undergrad – UCSD and SDSU. What do you know about these schools if anything?

I love my school right now in Florida but they don’t have Intl Business and apparently SDSU has one of the best programs in the nation, but at the same time UCSD is a better school right? Not to mention its prime right in the middle of La Jolla.

Just wanted to know your thoughts man? How would you compare their locations/social scenes?

I am from san diego

actually grow up over there

UCSD all the way...

Sup Bro.

I went to UCSD for undergrad.

First off, SDSU, fun party school, BIG school. But dude, academically, its probably not where you want to be. Sure if it has a good program that you are looking for specifically, go for it, but otherwise, I'd say look for something with a little better academic reputation.

UCSD, great school, of course, its very academic. Greek system is nearly non existant. Not a big party school, but good location. Its up on the cliffs in La Jollla. Not much within walking distance (although you can walk to one beach, its just a hike).

Socially, SDSU is a blast. A high school buddy of mine went there so I partied there a lot. Its inland, not near the beach, but is CHOCK FULL OF HOT WOMEN! Its like ASU in that sense.. TONS AND TONS of hot chicks. You wouldn't believe! UCSD, eh.. they say that 9 out of 10 women in San Diego are drop dead gorgeous, the 10th goes to UCSD. Lotsa Asians, Indians, etc... lotsa not to great white women.. like 1 black dude and a couple latinos. SDSU has much more diversity, many more homies. UCSD has a few sports, no football and are division 2/3. SDSU is a Div 1 school, not a top tier one (they are not in the Pac-10 or anything) but sports is still a big deal there for many. At UCSD no one goes to basketball games or anything (well maybe family and close friends of players).

The schools reputation is great. They do NOT have an undergraduate business program though. They have a Management Science program which is basically Econ on steroids. Most people who plan on going to business school major in that or Econ. A few try Urban Planning and what not, but mostly econ or management science.

If you can get accepted, I'd say go for it. What other school and cities are you looking at?

What else would you like to know?

Lestat is right. SDSU is nothing but hot hot women. Enjoy those years -- the women only get uglier once you leave college. :)
its amazing the shear numbers of hot women there though.. damn!!! and someone's gonna be fucking them, might as well be you!

Funny you compare SDSU with ASU, I actually went there to visit the campus but picked UCF over it because I didnt dig the desert atmosphere too much.... but yea the females were top shelf.

I'm thinkn its the best idea to finish out the intl business program at SDSU (thatd be tight too cause Im a SigEp at UCF and they have a chapter there) and maybe do graduate studies somewhere else in Cali. Other than SD I'd only look at Los Angeles schools (UCLA, USC) or OC area (UC-Irvine).

I don't like trashy ass neighborhoods or anything like that.... I think someone told me SDSU was in the Dominican ghetto, maybe it was USD. Anything else you can tell me Im still a little tied about where I should look at.

here look for yourself

sdsu website:

" The International Business program was ranked 7th nationwide by U.S. News and World Report (2005) in the category of "undergraduate international business programs." This ranking places our program in the top one percent of undergraduate international business programs in the United States. "

That was straight from SDSUs website..... unless UCSDs program is in the top 6 I dont see how its better, for me at least

you may be ok with SDSU, make sure you get all A's though.

I'm assuming you want to go into business, you probably know by now that to make the real money you need to do the following:

Undergrad at a decent school/program with 3.0+ grads
Work for 3-5 years in a corporate or entreprenureal environment, show leadership and accomplishment
take the GMAT (700+ and you are set, get at least a 650 though for consideration to top schools)
Apply to Business School.

Cali has GREAT schools. Stanford, Cal Berkeley, UCLA to start... then if you don't get in there try USC. SDSU has a business school too (MBA) but their average starting salary for grads is like 42,000!!! At the other schools I listed average starting salaries are 100K+

I love Tempe man, ASU is awesome, i was gonna go there my whole life but I got better grades then anticipated in high school and smoked to SAT so I decided to stay in Cali and go to a UC school. I've always love the desert scene though, and the women there.

SDSU isn't in the nicest area, but its not as ghetto as USC for example. Its a college area so there are plenty of students around.

And yes, UCSD has no business undergraduate program.

Univ of South Carolina has a decent Int Business program, IIRC.

yep. And since these women understand supply vs demand -- and that guys can have their pick of the litter -- very few have that stuck-up beached whale, male-hating club attitude adult women get! More competition, more choices = great for the guys. :)

SDSU and ASU same damn thing lol

why only SD? check out UCSB (santa barbara)
thanks man.

SDSU has soe advantages over SDSU... closer to the beach and mexico (underage drinking legal)

ASU though has a better college town, Mill Ave is awesome and walking distance. Nothing like that at SDSU.

When are we gonna hang out man?

SDSU is an overcrowded shit hole.. lots of hot women though.

UCSD is where you go if you want a real education and a job afterwards.. I lost count of the losers with a degree living in PB and didnt want to give up the party life, mostly grads of SDSU.

the beach was PACKED this last weekend man, lots of eye candy EVERYWHERE.

June is usually overcast, but it just started to get sunny and its awesome.

Beach all day.. bonfires at night, plenty of fun things to do in the summer man, can't beat it.

Dont take that shit for granted, my ass is stuck up here in Michigan Im so fucking bored, but the flipside is all you can do is hit up the gym for hours a day so Im swelling up fast.

Hey Lestat how are UCLA, Irvine, and Santa Barbara in your opinion? Those, along with UCSD, are pretty much my 4 choices in terms of undergrad colleges.

Here's the formula for out of towners:

San Diego == Real california.

San Francisco = Nerd land.

Los Angeles = Mexico.

LA ain't bad.... my cuz lives in BevHills just a few blocks from Sunset.... I make every excuse to visit the lucky bastard

UCLA, great school, great location, fun social college town (Westwood).

Santa Barbara, good school, great party atmosphere mixed with academics. No one who has gone there regrets it.

Irvine, good safety UC school. Academically right in the middle of the UCs. College town sucks, but close to the beach (Newport Beach in the OC). Lots of Asians. Its ok, but this should be the order:

UCLA
UCSD
UCSB
UCI

Thanks man.

Yeah, I dunno if I have what it takes to get into UCLA, but if I got accepted it'd be my first choice. 3.5 GPA weighted, 2100 on the SAT's (translates to 1400), and National Merit on the PSAT. That's my "resume" if you will..hopefully it'll be enough. But if worst come to worst I have davis and irvine to fall back on.

hmmmm

I was under the impression that the only UC school to offer business degrees was UC irvine.

In any case - SDSU probably has a better business program than any UC school. Your major will be highly impacted though - meaning it will take you forever to get your degree.

UofA on the other hand has one of the top rated business schools in the country. But Int'l business is not offered as a major here.

Dude, not to be fucked up, but you are full of shit and giving terrible, dead wrong advice.

UC Berkeley's Business School is TOP 10 in the COUNTRY! (#6 this year)
UCLA is #11, narrowly missing the top 10.

IRVINE is #49.

SDSU is considered TIER 3.

Anyone who tells someone to go to SDSU over a UC has their facts wrong.

My rankings were all GRADUATE school rankings, however their strength is relative to their Undergraduate strength. Cal Berkeley has a VERY competative undergraduate business program that you apply for after your 2nd year and requires a summer session to complete.

Like I said before, the AVERAGE STARTING SALARY FOR A SDSU MBA was 42,000.00 per year when I was looking at graduate schools in 2000. I made more then that then.

Good luck man.

Your scores should get you into Davis, UCLA is a stretch.

I got into UCSD and UC Berkeley in 1995 with a 4.1 gpa and 1300 SAT (old version, translates to 1450)

Davis is a good school and can be a TON of fun. I grew up in that area.

Catalyst...I take it tutition isn't an issue...you're gonna be "out of state" right?

Might be something to consider...

I went to No. Arizona myself in Flagstaff (class of '90)...I know a little about ASU and Lestat seems right on with his knowledge of all 3...

If I had to go to school in Cali (can't stand most of that state, grew up in San Fran Valley in the 70's...yuck), I would choose SD. (I sometimes vacation at Coronado..no not the ritzy hotels...the yucky state beach, Silver Strand...lol).

Good Luck

In Arizona, unfortunately there aren't any super competative schools.

U of A is the best 4 year school they have, its good, don't get me wrong, just not in the caliber of the UC Schools.

ASU is a fairly generic state college, not a place that the top high school grads go, but it is a place where you can get a decent education and job. If you do well there you will get into grad schools.

Northern Arizona. Much smaller school, different feel then the other two, people who go there generally LOVE it. They have some good specialties.

There are a few other smaller private schools in the Phoenix Area as well (Grand Canyon, Thunderbird, etc).

Thanks fellas...

and damn I forgot about UCSB Ill have to check it out, I know alotta ppl in Montecito. So Lestat... if I wind up at either SDSU or UCSD have any tips with the resumes? Do they like lots of referrals or certain qualities from students?... trying to get ahead of the game right now.

its all about grades man...

Spongebob and Catalyst, lemme give you the low down.

Fist off, I moved here in 1995 for school, so I have been here 10 years.

Gone are the days of sleepy beach towns. San Diego is no longer a place for people in LA to find an escape and refuge. You'd be more likely to find that in Orange County now.

In the last 10 years downtown San Diego has exploded! It used to be a dirty, grungy area lined with strip clubs. Now its full of restuarants, boutiques, and night clubs. There are high end hotels, Seaport village, and theaters.

The beach cities are now all owned by the filthy rich. Coastal properties cannot be found for less then 1 million, but to be realistic you better come with 2-3 million if you want to be within 4 blocks of the ocean.

There are limitless things to do though. We have a desert to the east with moutains and San Dunes, we have the coast with kayaking, snorkeling, surfing, fishing, swimming, bodyboarding, or even just people watching.

The telcom industry is booming here with many major players in the area. Sorrento Valley has been dubbed "Wireless Valley" a play on the "Silicon Valley" in the bay area.

The MEDIAN home price is over 500K... only 10% of households can afford a median priced home.

Bare minimum to get in the real estate game is around 250K, that will get you a 1 bedroom 1 bath condo conversion from the 70s. Anything new and you are looking at 700K+ for a starter condo.

We get a lot of sun, but temperatures rarely break into the 90s, rarely into the 80s on the coast.

May and June are largely overcast, however water temperatures stay mild year round (in the 60s).

We have some big universities, UCSD, SDSU, and USD. We have 3 law schools (USD, George Washingtong, and Thomas Jefferson) 1 med school (UCSD), and some other smaller specialized schools (e.g Design Institute).

Right now its not a great place for someone just starting out, fresh out of college. There are talks of a housing bubble. Cost of living is moderate EXCEPT for the housing which is extreme. Rent is fairly affordable. 1 bedrooms $1000, 2 bedrooms $1500 3 bedrooms $2000

i just dont understand it, why in the world would anyone wanna pay sooo much to live somewhere. are the saleries that much better. and im talking comparitively. for example a decent engineer may make about 100k on avg i think in this area. what would he make there?

Quality of life, plain and simple.... thats why Im going there. Socal is the perfect atmosphere, class of people, etc IMO... and Im willing to pay more to enjoy myself. A higher salary will help compensate for the higher cost of living but obviously not completely.

Lestat good info man thanks....
Hows the RE market there now? I hear people are buying into Carlsbad, apparently thats the next big thing.... not coastal though so thats a turn off for me.

i understand what your saying but damn, the quality is not that much better.

there are too many places that have the same if not better but way lower in cost of living. dont get me wrong im sure its great, i lived in northern cali and thought it was great.

id still like to see some comparisons between saleries, to justify it.

Carlsbad IS coastal man, and its already had its day. a 3 bedroom place is 1.1 million. I know because my buddy just got one. Carlsbad is a beach town though homie.

And salaries here are not much better then anywhere else. I was offered more money in TN and Alabama actually.

Engineers at my company make anywhere between 60-150K

then how can someone afford anything worth a shit to live in? at even 150k someone probably could only manage a 1500$ house note, which wouldnt translate into anything more than a 1bedroom. with kids and two vehicles how does anyone make a living?

I don't understand it myself.

Basically the only people who own are people who were already in real estate before the big run up over the past 3-5 years.

Thought it was east of dtown SD... wtf.

...Im surprised people don't make more money? Doesnt justify the higher cost of living then

yea someone making 150k around here would be doing pretty damn good, real good in fact. the houston area. or austin area. and suburbs are coming up everywhere, real nice places. 250k will get you a real nice house.

No man Carlsbad is called NORTH county, about 20 mins north of San Diego proper... 30-40 mins from downtown.

East is Chula Vista.. El Cajon, Santee.... not nice places to live for the most part.

From the south going up the coast you have

Tijuana
San Ysidro
Imperial Beach
Downtown
Ocean Beach
Point Loma
Mission Beach
Pacific Beach
Bird Rock
La Jolla
Black's Beach (La Jolla Cliffs)
Del Mar
Solana Beach
Encinitas
Carlsbad
Oceanside

I'm in Diego (PB/Clairemont area right now, been in OB, Point Loma, and La Jolla b4 too), and I'm about to take the bar in AZ and move there so I can actually have a decent home. The cost of homes here is absolutely fucking ridiculous. Can't say I'm much impressed w/ anything but the climate/geography anyways. The people tend to be dumb as rocks and kinda rude, they certainly can't drive for SHIT,(even some Trucker survey confirmed that this is the land of the most retarded drivers), and there's not much good food or bars/clubs unless you want to spend hundreds of dollars and fuck w/ parking downtown and/or La Jolla. I SURE as fuck wouldnt raise a kid here either, too many homeless-pervert type dudes, gangsters, dirty hippies, and plain old dumb fucking people around here (this coming from somebody who grew up near Detroit, lol.) It was fun for the 7 years I was here...but now I'm definitely ready to get the fuck out ASAP. It loses it's shine after a few years if you ask me, and then youre left w/ nothing but: ridiculous cost of living, dumbfuck people, overpopulation, bad drivers/traffick, polluted oceans, shitty food... and your only consolation is: the beach & weather. The beach & sun isnt enough to outweigh the other shit for me...but to each his own.

and this is why people live in the suburbs.

500k median price of housing...aka you get a decent-shit house for wayyyyy too much money.
