Led Zeppelin may well have been...

the greatest LIVE rock band ever.

Discuss.

That depends, are you talking stage show? Performance? Technical ability?

bands that I have seen

Stage Show: I'd have to say Pink Floyd without a doubt

Overall Performance: Blue Oyster Cult

Technically: Rush

Stage shows are garbage, secondary.

Maybe, can't tell you from experience, but all their live recordings are goddamn terrible. The Song Remains the Same is beyond sloppy. They sound burned out.

I agree ... Haven't seen them personally, but have seen footage and heard recordings. Page is just all over the place - similarly to John Frusciante of RHCP .. at least he has Flea to back him up

zeppelin (page and plant, and if i remember correctly they actually had john paul jones playing bass at this particular show) was great live when i saw them....close second was Neil young..followed by the boss, then the stones...ive seen a lot of bands....these are my top four that i've seen live.

Are those your top 4 favorite bands? I think we tend to prefer the live shows of our favorites, for obvious reasons

ya, i guess theyre my favorite bands...led zepp would still be my favorite even if i had not seen page and plant live...but after seeing the boss and the neil young live, i have a newfound respect for them,,so ya they run a close second and third, respectively...the stones were great, but they're not one of my favorites..theyve put out a lot of bad music..

Okay, I should've said released. They have some quality bootlegs including the shit off that How the West Was Won.

I will not back down on SRTS, that still sounds terrible.

They are my second favorite band period behind Pink Floyd which will always be my overall favorite easily

I agree that many recorded Led Zep live performances are just awful, especially the "The Song Remains The Same" material. But in the studio, they were The Beatles of the '70s, no one else out there mastered as many different styles while still retaining their own identity. And the recorded live and TV performances of theirs from 1968-1972 are stellar. There's one in particular from Swedish TV, maybe when they were still "The New Yardbirds", of "Dazed And Confused", that is amazing.

There's also a bootleg of The Yardbirds from early 1968, with Page on guitar, that is amazing. They were already doing a version of "Dazed And Confused" back then, with Keith Relf on vocals, Chris Dreja on bass, and Jim McCarty on drums, as well as a guitar instrumental that was an early version of what became "Black Mountainside".

thas what i've heard for years.
