no these are sophisticated items..how can a kid shoot a laser beam up on a plane moving at 500mph?

it obviously has some tracking device..most likely military issue type stuff

Although its true that the plane is moving quite fast, it doesn't appear so from the ground. So, it "could" be kids.

But, I thought that the light from "true" lasers isn't supposed to diffute or disperse in the atmosphere. Thus, if they had a true laser, they should be able to see it from the cockpit.

I just remember the damned project where I had to use a couple of cardboard tubes and a shoebox and voilia! Laser.
