What do you think of a laptop gateway5300...64M and 5GB hard....I talked with someone who does computer repairs....He has one for sale ...he did replace the hard...

He wants $450 and with a DVD he is asking $550...

What do you think?

I spent $360 early this month and got a Toshiba 8100 with 700MHz PIII, 128MB RAM, 12GB disk, XP Pro and WinDVD preinstalled, and a removable/internal DVD-ROM. Bought a replacement battery for another $36 on Ebay because the one that came with it was crap, so that's $420 for twice the notebook you're describing.

Your 'friend' is bending you over and buttering your bunghole.

Do NOT get a gateway.

Dell is the way to go if you're dead-set on a PC.

I am just testing the market.....I need a good laptop as I tend to travel a lot...mostly to Europe...

Any on line stores where I can get a good deal? I dont wanna spend more than $600...

I was checking out DELL on line....Why do they want SS # ????

There's a "Computer Show" that wanders around various county fairgrounds and hotels in the NY/CT/NJ area. Every mom-and-pop computer store in forty miles buys a table and pushes tin for the day. Cases, motherboards, parts, "gray" software ("To be sold with a complete system only"). Fun if you're into that sort of thing. Good way to get taken if you don't know what's what.

There's actually more than one outfit organizing the shows. MarketPro, Tri-State Fairs, some other outfit. Tri-State has been getting pretty sucky lately but I figure I'll give 'em one more try. It's a question of luck as to what you find there any way.

I wont spend more than $600 on a good laptop.....thus, I need a good tip as to how and where to get a laptop!

Some of the manufacturers like IBM and Dell sell lease returns and refurbs, check their web sites for online sales.

$600 should get you into something with a PIII/800, 128M RAM, and a 20G HDD with a 14" screen, which is still a pretty useable machine.

Is IBM as good as DELL?

I looked at DELL website and I dont like that they are asking for your SS# when you place your order....

Well, personally, I PREFER IBM Thinkpads to Dell laptops, but that's just one man's opinion. I've got a three-year-old Thinkpad A21m that is still standing up to my abuse and it kicks ass. You stand a greater likelihood of reaching a native speaker of English when you call IBM support, too, compared with Dell who outsources their telephone support to India.

I haven't looked at refurb prices in a long time, but the A21, A22, and T21 series Thinkpads should be in your price range by now. Those will be PIII systems somewhere between 700MHz and 1GHz.

I wonder how reliable could those refurbished laptops be??

I dunno. I don't know anyone who's ever bought one. I think most of those are lease returns. I wonder what refurbishing involves? I'm pretty sure they get new batteries, the rest of it is probably just a good cleaning, and they wipe the hard disk and re-install windows and the laptop-specific drivers and utilities.

IMO.. Order of laptop quality to cost

Toshiba
Dell
IBM

Yes, Refurished get a batt check and if its not too old and ok some keep the old one some get a new one. The HDD is fragged and chkdisked and bad sectors marked.
The main Issue IMO with refurb is the display as they are usually not swapped unless that was the problem originally and that is the main component outside of the batt that has issues on laptops..

IBM does a better job of refurnishing than Dell or Toshiba for some reason..

$500 takes the laptop i mentioned earlier, i'm upgrading.

O_A_S, you might want to jump on this, it's a much newer, faster system than any of the other ones you've looked at in that price range.
